TomTom Go 940 LIVE

G-Rating

Rating of 4

The basics

The TomTom Go 940 LIVE is a GPRS-enabled in car satnav with 4.3-inch, 480x272-pixel touchscreen, 4GB Flash memory, Bluetooth and FM transmitter. Features include live traffic updates, Google searches, voice recognition and smart route timing.

The good

Is this a satnav or an iPhone stuck on its side? The 940’s GPRS web connection is a long way from 3G but it’s just right for keeping you up to date with local road conditions, tracking down businesses and saving a third of a penny on a litre of unleaded. As you’d expect from TomTom’s flagship navigator, the easy to use 940 is groaning with extra features, such as one-touch map updates, IQ Routes that take into account the time of day, and attentive voice recognition. Good luck finding your way to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, mind.

The bad

You’ll have to spend a lot of time on the road at rush hour to justify TomTom’s £8 monthly fee for the Live services (although do you get the first three months’ free). The service has had some teething issues, too, including poor coverage in some areas.

The bottom line

Salesmen and lorry drivers criss-crossing the country will appreciate the sheer wealth of time-shaving features on board the 940. Weekend drivers, however, might find this hitch-hiker an expensive luxury.

Would not buy the 940 again. It is OK and although the TomTom maps are the best I would advise to buy the cheapest UK model and just buy new every couple of years and that keeps your maps updated

I have had since its launch. It is the best Satnav I've ever had, but I can not always connect to the live services. The information you get is not always that accurate. I currently pay £7.98 a month and half the time I ignore it when it tells me i can save 4 mins here and there, as in another 5 mins it will only recalculate.

The 940 is the best ive ever had,as long as you keep it up to date its very accurate.I purchaced the yearly map updates and £7.98 monthly subcription its worth every penny on the time it saves me alone.

I own a 940 and am not really very impressed with it. Pros: Google search is a fantastic feature that shows you where your destination is on the map, allows you to navigate there or call them via handsfree. You can save the details as a favourite. The device is compact and the screen is bright and clear. Text to speech reads out road numbers and street names very well, though sometimes too much information is distracting. Cons: The FM transmitter works well but if you accidentally go above the speed limit for the road the device turns it off and never turns it back on. It pretends it's still playing and the only way you can get it back is to disable and enable the FM transmitter, then select your music again via the menu system, which is an awful lot of distracted button pushes for a safe driving experience. The Bluetooth works intermittantly. I find I have to go in to the menu system and query my mobile phone when I turn the unit on, because it won't automatically pair. MapShare feels like a bit fraud. Yes you can apply your own modifications to sections of road on the device, temporarily blocking roads and traffic directions or deleting/adding roads and changing names, but all that happens is these updates are uploaded to TomTom, they are NOT immediately applied to the map on your device, so if you are stuck because the device directs you down a road that you can't access, half the time all it will do is ask you to turn around when possible. You have no way of convincing the device that the turn is impossible. MapShare updates that are verified by TomTom and downloaded and applied to your map are all lost when a new map version is released, and MapShare modifications are not used in the construction of future maps. It's about time TomTom updated the graphics on their modern units. The refresh rate can be slow, and roads are jaggy. Fuel prices are updated around every three days, and the data from fuel stations can be out of date, so the fuel prices should be used as a general guide. Also, locations of fuel stations are inexact because they are based on postcode, so sometimes it can be difficult to find them, like in built up areas or retail parks. Safety camera accuracy seems poor. The device is happier telling you about speed cameras on roads that are parallel with you or overhead, and do not take direction of traffic in to account. There have been too many instances where camera locations are not shown. Voice command does not allow you to make calls.

Fabulous. I only went for the 540, but Live services are worth the money if you doing any amount of travel. Google Search is really useful as well. Not overly keen on the voice recognition, but it does work.

I have been using a PDA with TomTom Navigator 5 installed for the last 4 years, so moving up to this new kit was a MAJOR leap. I was not disappointed, it has all the familiar features that makes TomTom so easy to use plus soooooo many useful features. I particularly like the "lane guidance" feature and the speed limit/cameras too. I love this product so much I bought two, one for me and one for my partner. She travels the country with work and it takes all the stress away.

I have just got the XL Live Europe, it seems to have all the good things that work well mentioned above, but for half the price, and currently comes with the whole first 12 months of live services included.

I work for a large German car manufacturer and need to navigate to many locations every day across the South East. Having owned several Sat Navs, the Tom Tom 940 Live is the easiest to use but more importantly has never failed in two years of solid use since buying it. I download four map updates a year (subscription req), have the ability to edit in missing road names directly on the map with the option to then share this new information with others. Another nice feature is to see other unit locations via the buddies menu and even send them a location to navigate to. Traffic info is very good and has saved me from hours sitting on closed motorways, the remote control is also a nice feature. We have Nav systems in our vehicles which cost 2500 GBP, they are rubbish compared to this. Go to pocketgpsworld.com for speed cameras rather than Tom Toms though. Cant wait for the Go 1005 Live which is released soon.

I cannot believe I'm reading this info - just looked at buyers on Amazon and nearly all of them advise not to buy. Do TomTom pay to advertise on Channel 5?

I have the 740 live. The "Live" features are excellent but the unit has let me down several times and had to be totally reprogrammed via their website. TomTom informed me by email that I could continue with the updates I had already purchased and needed to do nothing to continue my subscription. After the alloted date of the renewal it failed to update and after several emails to them, they finally admitted that the monthly option was no longer available, even though they had already offered it to me. In the end I did get 6 months free as way of compensation for the mess they had made. The unit is not 100% but it is an amazing bit of kit. TomTom should really get their act together in the support department.
