ES Alltrack

The basics

The Alltrack is a mountain board skateboard with a high-powered motor so there’s no need to push. It also has big fat tyres with great ground clearance for all-terrain touring. A responsive bluetooth hand controller takes care of acceleration, reverse and braking.

The deck itself is quality maple wood married with lightweight magnesium alloy trucks and nine-inch pneumatic knobbly tyres.

The good

The 800 watt 36 volt motor is powerful enough take the Alltrack from a standing start to 25mph in just four seconds. It’s not just fast; the same motor delivers an impressive braking force when needed. It also has the stamina to move a 16 stone rider, can climb 15-degree slopes and has a top range of 25 miles on the flat. All that, and the battery only takes four hours to recharge.

The motor is built into the rear wheels and a slim and lightweight, but powerful Li FePo4 lithium battery is slung under the deck. This means there is no gearing or exposed moving parts to foul the underside when moving over rough ground.

The pistol-style hand controller fits easily into your fist and uses an interference-free Bluetooth signal to allow rapid and smooth motor control. With a little practice, quickly regulating speed and braking becomes second nature. There is also a reverse switch should you need it. Turning is done the old fashioned way, with you shifting your weight, just like any skateboard.

The bad

Although it claims to be the lightest powered mountain board on the market, the Alltrack still weighs in at a hefty 19kg. It is not cheap: expect to pay between £600 and £700. You can buy second hand motorbikes for that.

The bottom line

An impressive performance from a skateboard, but you'd expect it to hover like Marty McFly's for £700
