Sony Ericsson Satio
The basics
The Sony Ericsson Satio is a 3G smartphone with 12MP camera, A-GPS, music player and microSD card slot. It runs on Symbian S60 software tweaked for touchscreen, and measures up at 112 x 55 x 13mm. It weighs 126g.
The good
The Satio features the finest ever camera we've seen on a mobile phone. Its 12MP sensor, coupled with a Xenon flash, delivers fantastic shots whether you're outdoors in the daytime or sat in a dimly-lit pub.
The bad
Sadly, in other respects the Satio comes off as distinctly average. The Symbian UI doesn't work well with the touchscreen, and you need to poke surprisingly firmly to get a response. Then there are the confusing, labyrinthine menus, which make you yearn for an iPhone or Android mobile's simplicity. The build quality feels cheap and plasticky, and the lack of a proper 3.5mm headphone input is a prod in the eye for music lovers.
The bottom line
Despite its premium pricetag and much-hyped media skills, the Sony Ericsson Satio is a rather run-of-the-mill mobile notable only for its superb 12MP camera. Elsewhere it's something of a disappointment that won't give the iPhone 3GS or HTC Hero any sleepless nights.

I've had mine a week and I love it already. I bought it for the camera. It's a Cybershot not a Walkman therefore it doesn't need a 3.5.mm jack if you want a music phone try the W995. the menu's are a bit strange as is the media player. It will play wmv files through the file manager but NOT through the media manager ! Strange. My only complaint is I couldn't bluetooth all my contacts from my K850 to my Satio, I had to use the PC manager software. Now thats done this phone is all I want it to be :). If you want an iPhone, buy an iPhone. If music is your life, buy an iPhone but If you want to have a camera phone, you could IMHO do much worse.

As usual the gadget show big up the i phone the i phone on o2 is very expensive and not worth it, its not a phone its a gadget your cant bluetooth stuff like pictures to a picture kiosk and you cant have your own ringtine from an mp3. The satio is excellent it doesnt feel cheap the symbian operating system works very well better than on the 5800 and n97. The video quality is amazing i have a 16gb card with 20 full movies on it and it is brilliant, i also have garmin mobile xt on it, i went to the o2 the other day to see michael mcintyre i used my garmin nuvi 255w to get there but it kept on messing up so i used my satio and it didnt go wrong once and only took 5 secs to connect. i have loads of apps on it all made for the nokia but they work on the satio too and the phone doesnt hang at all my 5800 used to hang loads plus all the apps we're free not a rip off like the i store ones.

Had 3 phones in as many weeks. The concept is there but the thing is just so unreliable. Within minutes it froze and the only way to use it was to remove the battery and start again. After doing this a few times I returned it to Vodafone for a replacement. But... The replacement did exactly the same. No matter whether I updated the software (as advised by Sony Ericsson) or not, all I had was a useless gadget. After 3 I decided to try a Nokia N97 Mini. At last I'm happy with my phone.

i absolutely love this phone. The touchscreen is incredibly responsive. The only downside is that when in horizontal mode a little tilt will revert back to vertical. The layout is easy once you get used to the phone and it can be changed to suit the user

i have had mine for two weeks now and i quite like it apart from the Symbian software which is awful, hopefully sony ericsson will have a update soon which is more user friendly. If i wanted that awful software i would have kept the nokia n97. Aprt from that its a nice fone with a great camera Keep it real people

I have had mine a few months, the screen can be a bit slow but the camera is SUPURB I have taken some excellent photos at an incredibly high quality. I have purchased the additional speaker that clips under the phone and the sound quality for music or watching a film on it is crystal clear. the menus do take a bit of getting used to and I agree its no I-Phone but then again the I-Phone is no camera. Well done Sony Ericsson. (but next time make the menu more user friendly ;-) )

I have owned a satio since the release day and have never had a problem with it. Camera great, wifi excellent. Touchscreen is OK only fidley when navigating the internet. BBC iplayer very usable. I even have movies loaded on the memory card for plane or train journey's. Does everything i need it to do well.

I have had this phone less than a week. It does hang quite regularly when the battery is low and the resistive touch screen is deffinatly slower and less responsive than my old Samsung Tocco capacitive screen (that said the Tocco isn't a smart phone and doesn't have as much to think about). The camera is awesome and the screen is amazing for watching movies. Music playback hangs every time without fail if I skip more than about 5 tracks in a row it gives up and I have to take the battery out and replace it to get going again. I am hoping some updates are released soon to make the phone a bit more reliable. People have complained about the qwerty but I like it and if you don't there is always the alpha numeric keypad option. This phone has its annoyances in that it is slower than my old phone and hangs pretty regularly but I am hoping future software upgrades will fix this problem. Besides that I love this phone and have had no problem navigating the menus at all.

I have had my phone since the day of release and have founf the touch screen to be most responsive for both texting and navigation the design is nice and sleek and yes the camera is suberb overall I would be happy to recommend this phone. However there are a couple of things SE could and should have done the micro sd card that comes with phone is only 8gb and should really have been 32gb or at least 16gb and the other thing is the playnow apps store this is seriously lacking in any worth while content unless you want to buy a dictionary for £25 it really is very very poor.

Can anyone help please? I've currently got the Samsung Tocca Ultra and really getting into using it as a video player, camera and music player. Sometimes I even get to use it to make phone calls on. I've recently got myself a pair of video glasses and was thinking about getting the Satio because there's the TV out. I'm assuming that I should be able to connect the phone to the glasses and watch my videos that way. Has anybody done that yet or connected it to the telly? Cheers, Col

I think the phone build is of decent quality and doesnt look cheap. Overall the phone is pretty good and the camera and nearly hd video are quality. Down sides are the battery is really rubbish and Im lucky to get through the day with it. There is no 3.5mm audio port. There are nowhere near enough apps available. And a big one for me is ther is no voice dialling. I think with a little bit more effort sony ericsson could have turned this into an awesome phone

At my last upgrade it was a toss up between the Satio and the Palm Pre. I chose the Satio specifically for the camera and it’s excellent! I used to regularly get stuck without a decent camera. Now I never miss a shot! It has all the features of a normal Sony camera, bar the optical zoom. It also has great connectivity, with easy access via WiFi/WAP etc. It’s not without its flaws. The touch screen is not as responsive as I hoped and typing a text can sometimes drive you mad! No matter how many times I recalibrate the screen, I find hitting the right key on the full QWERTY is difficult. Or maybe that’s just me. I have to agree with torres76. The gadget show spends a lot of time ‘bigging’ up Apple. But my problem with Apple is that they sacrifice substance for style. The iPhone could be so much better. It does everything, but everything is average. Like the iPod the music quality is poor, and the camera is practically non existent. At the end of the day, it all down to what you want in a phone. If you like a phone to play around with, buy an iPhone. If you want a dedicated music phone, get one! However if you want a phone with a decent camera, the Satio is the one for you! The best way I can explain it is; don’t see this as a phone with a camera. This is a camera with a phone!

I have owned this phone for 4 months now and have to say it is fantastic. Nobody has yet shown me anything the iPhone can do that this thing can't match or better. It does not look or feel cheap and plasticy as the review stated but instead seem well put together and, with the latest software update, easy to use and responsive. The camera wipes almost any other camera phone off the map (the iPhone was never on the map in terms of cameras) and its GPS locks on very quickly and with great accuracy even indoors. The only concern I have is that with the obsession companies have with trying to make iDrones they are moving away from great phones like this so what will I replace it with that can match it? Sorry Gadget show I love the program but you have to lose the iTech love, its mostly hype.

I've had my satio since it came out and it's brill.Camera is awsome,as is the video, the touchscreen wasn't perfectbut since the upgrade it's alot better now.The i-phone is a gadget, the camera is 5-6 years behind most cameras,it's only the touchscreen and apps that are good.I haven't had a problem with my satio and love it loads.
