Samsung Solid Extreme Review

G-Rating

Rating of 3

The basics

The Samsung Solid Extreme is a rugged mobile phone handset designed for rough and tumbles. It has a strong rubberized casing, a 1.3-megapixel camera, MP3 player and FM radio. It measures 49x113x17mm and weighs just 103g.

The good

If you want a phone as tough as Wolverine's nails (and believe you me, they're tough) then the Samsung Solid Extreme is up to the task. It's ruggedised outer casing protects it from knocks and scrapes and leaves it feeling indestructible. You can submerge it in water up to a depth of a meter for up to half an hour and it'll still allow you to ring home. Like the casing, battery life is durable too. We managed to eke out around nine hours in talk time. Plus it has around 600 hours of standby life! Oh and there's a nifty SOS mode that contacts a pre-defined person should you get in trouble!

The bad

Unfortunately, while the Samsung Solid's tough as Chuck Norris' old boots it's about as smart as David Beckham. The handset is light on features for a start. There’s no 3G, no Wi-Fi, no GPS. There’s no fully fledged Web browser, though WAP is supported. The camera shoots at just 1.3 megapixels, and we didn’t find the viewfinder very helpful. In some modes it frames more than you get in the final shot. Nor is the screen all that easy to see in bright sunlight. Styling's a bit "old-school" as well, looking like something from the late 90s. But then if you're after something tough, you don't expect it to be good-looking. Take a gander at Steven Seagal!

The bottom line

As rugged phones this one is pretty tough. Put it in a ring with the Land Rover phone, however, and it may come out with a tyre tread over its fascia!

I love this phone. Beautiful soft feeling phone, nice key action. A rubbery lean David Beckham Samsung rather than an enormous plastic Martin Johnson Land Rover.

had one for a year and it does all you'd expect . Loudspeaker is loud which makes a nice change, it plays back podcasts well without earfones needed and never goes wrong. battery is superb to. Now i bet they'll re-issue it and ruin the basics of a great phone.

good feel to phone but big negatives if you're left handed, thumb covers volume buttons, which are too feather touch, next minute you can't hear. Software takes too long to navigate and customise. poor quality sound. Gave up on it and went back to a nokia
