Samsung Galaxy S2
The basics
The Samsung Galaxy S II is one of the latest smartphones on the market, running Android and boasting a stunningly thin design. It's packed with features and offers a fantastic screen. It's also the best smartphone on the market.
The good
The Samsung Galaxy S2 features one of the best screens available on a smartphone. At 4.2 inches, it's large enough to consume media content with ease, and it's also pin-sharp. Samsung has used AMOLED technology to produce stunning colour reproduction, with vivid hues and deep blacks on offer.
The Galaxy S2 is also the fastest smartphone we've had the pleasure of using, with the Gingerbread version of Android being powered by a 1.2GHz processor. Despite the performance, battery life is also pretty decent for an Android handset.
Features include an excellent 8-megapixel camera, which lags only behind the Nokia N8 for image quality. All this is crammed into an incredibly thin and light casing, measuring just 9mm at its thinnest point.
The bad
There's very little to dislike about the Samsung Galaxy S II. The huge screen and skinny casing can make it slightly awkward to hold, and the Android OS gets some slightly useless additions from Samsung, but both of these points are minor niggles.
The bottom line
In short, we love the Samsung Galaxy S2. With an excellent OS, and even better hardware, it's the best smartphone in the world right now.

best phone ive had so far - very smooth downloads, quick and responsive, coverage depending on network of course but if its within wifi range it is stunning. only had it a few days so still finding way around but so far ive found it a liitle counter intuitive but ive been on symbian before now so i guess im still finding my way. oh yes, buying screen covers definately creates annoying lag - so your choice if you do. screen is generous and vivid.. mm anyone know how to get the sticky stuff off the scenn ? cough! - i mean when you take the sticky plastic off - i dont know!! :)

It's about time the Gadget included this, it's been out for months already. Best smartphone currently available, period.

screen is outstanding, as you'd expect from samsung. BUT.....build quality on a samsung handset will let you down over a 2 year contract. all that cheap plastic eeecch.

easily the best phone around. everything runs so smoothly, no lag, and has a huge screen. looks like it will be awkward in small pockets because of its size, but is barely noticeable! highly recommend it!

The best phone ive bought so far!! After using iphone 4 and ipod touch, I didnt think an android would cut it! The main thing I was looking for in a smartphone was speed, good web browsing, push emails, a decent interface and a decent battery life. This phone has it all plus a fantastic camera, quality video, memory card slot, dnla for media sharing, bluetooth that actually lets you send stuff, a ton of apps and a few neat tricks you would find on a jail broken iphone...as standard!!! The build quality is good considering most people will end up putting a thin case and screen protector on it...you got to be crazy to keep a phone for 2 years and not have minimum protection!!! The next version can only get better...apple have alot of thinking to do!!

This phone is awesome, easy to operate and is super fast. Internet access is rapid and there is as many settings on the camera as you would expect on a dslr. Would recommend it.

Aftering enduring 2 years of Blackberry Storm2, I finally got my hands on the Galaxy S2. Had many phones over the past 15years, a number of which have been smart phones. I have to say that the S2 is the best phone I have had to date. Responsive Screen, good battery life (especially when you consider, that I've not put the phone down since I got it yesterday :) ), and great selection of apps in the market place ( I have a jealous wife now, who still has another 18months with her iPhone4 which is causing her nothing but grief)

Been using this phone for a while and found the battery life was not so good. However, i found a heavy duty battery and rear cover and now it' is great and with the extra bulk i find it easier to hold as well. best phone I've had

Had mine since the end of August and have to say it's the best phone I've had by far. Can't fault it! The battery is excellent, screen just superb and I love the thin body of it (although I have gone for a flip case just for a bit of protection). Haven't found the need for a screen protector due to the gorilla glass that comes as standard. Camera is first class as is the video. Ultra quick response and quick smooth internet access (I'm with Orange). This phone does it all, been able to watch all videos I've come across (Apple take note). Brilliant phone, anyone who buys it erik not be disappointed!!

some of my mates have it and dont like it mainly because of the power because it only has around 3 hours(i think) but overall they said it was a great phone

I agree its fab and better selling than the iPhone this year but why are companies so slow to produce a decent sound dock for it????? The only let down on the s2 is the speakers, however i have an enormous amount of music on it (fine with headphones) and would dearly love to have a decent DAB / radio / dock for it to connect to. There are hundreds for the i-phone but NONE for smartphones with mini usb connectors!!!!

Had this for a few months now & without doubt the best phone I've ever had. My sister has an N8 & hates it, brother still running an i-3 & frustrated. Have found the battery life excellent, the ability to shut down background appts easily just brilliant. Have no complaints what so ever on this. Highly recommended, even against the new i-4s. Samsung do rule on this. I agree with Jackie above, why oh why has no company come up with a decent mini-usb docking system for a smartphone???? I have loads of music on mine & it does get a little tedious having to have headphones on all the time.

All i ever wanted was a Blackberry, and i got one and i was happy, but it started playing up and got the Galaxy S II.... and i will never look back, sat nav is amazing, camera is second to none with its HD, and everything about it is brilliant.

Finally made the leap from being an iPhone sheep. Not because i didnt like the phone but because i hate iTunes!!!! What a breath of fresh air the Galaxy S2 is, whatever I want to, not what iTunes will allow(usually for a fee), i could do. An awesome piece of kit with access to allow all manner of customization and a fantastic level tech. It was a big step that now i dont look back on. The Galaxy S2 is is far beyond the iPhone 4s.

I have used mobiles since the days of suitcase phones. What a long way we have come ! The Galaxy S2 is the best one so far and the first touch screen I have got on with. I still use a Nokia E90 on another number and recently sold a Nokia E7 because of the lack of apps. I have said for a long while I wanted a computer that could be used as a phone, not the other way around ie a small phone that goes on line, but the tiny screen makes it impractical to use. I find the screen superb and even dial up without using glasses. I think the only phone I would change the S2 for could be the Galaxy note, with an even bigger screen. Or perhaps I am just being greedy.

As a CPW store manager Ive used alot of different handsets over the years. At the mo I use Iph4, Nok Lumia but without a shaddow of a doubt the best handset i'm using is the S2. The handset is packed full of great features and the OS is by far the best, except for pinch/pull which is superior on any Apple device. Camera quality is much better than the new Nokia even with the Carl Zeiss lens, altho outlook on the windows device now is why that is my work phone and the S2 the phone I enjoy.

I was just reading a comment about a docking station to avoid use of head phones whilst using media player. I got a micro usb to hdmi cable converter for £15 now I can plug it up to my tv and the device just mirrors on to the tv so I can listen to my tunes and watch films direct via tv speakers, sub etc. Really great gadget. Another option is if your sterio has an aux input, use 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack and run music directly that way.

Best tried and tested on the market. Beats iPhone 4 hands down. Loads of battery management and other apps on Android Marketplace and if you become power savvy only using the features that gobble the power as and when required (Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, Skype) once factory battery conditioned will easily go 5 days between charges, yes I did say 5 days. One tip, get a decent case to keep it looking pretty.

Got to admit I have had this phone around 6 months now after being a iphone sheep for 3 years and have never looked back, got sick of having to jailbreak my iphone to get the really useful apps from cydia that are already available on android ok yes i'm a tech head and I do admit the itunes phone (really you cant use one without it) is a good stepping stone for those that never worked out how to set the timer on a VCR but in reality you will always be restricted into only being able to do what apple allow you to do on this phone and be conned into thinking stuff like facetime and siri a great but in reality they have been around for years but no one really cares video calling and voice commands are just bog standard on this phone anyway

Just watched the Smartphone episode (18) why did they choose the Samsung Nexus and not the Galaxy S2?? (It has been out for months) Because the S2 would have wiped the floor with iPhone 4S! The best phone I have ever handled!! Even dropped mine in the toilet the other day & thankfully it survived with no problems!! Great screen, great battery, great speed, great apps, great camera... The list is endless! Top notch phone!

The best phone I've seen in a long time. It's got a very large, bright screen with accurate yet sensitive touchscreen. The quality of the phone is excellent and for it's size it's very light. A very good all-rounder, everything at the best quality

You know when mobile phones first came out and it seemed almost supernatural...? Even when you know the technological synergy that makes it work, there's definitely something of the dark arts about this device. Can't wait to see what they do with the S3

@Glyn The wifi doesent work??? Eh? This is only the 2nd phone I have had with wifi (only recently got a wifi router in my flat) and the phone works flawlessly! I can't understand what problems you may be having? It is very simple to use! The reason you read rave reviews & nothing about this so called wifi problem seem to me to be the problem is yours alone!

i have had this phone for not even a week now and i have already had to change the handset twice. they both overheated and "it is a very big problem with this phone" said the guy from the o2 store.i wouldn't say the phone is bad but try to keep the phone away from heating up e.g closing all background apps e.t.c

Great phone, had it for over 6 months now and never let me down. I've got it upgraded to ICS (Androdi v4) and all is running great if not better than before. It's never overheated or anything. Battery life is good for a phone with such a big screen. Would I go back to an iPhone? Not at the moment I would not, that's for sure.
Report as inappropriate4Barry24 April 2012
Well, I can't say I.m that impressed with the battery life. It struggles to last the day unless I switch stuff off. I also find the positioning of the edge mounted buttons rather awkward - I frequently press them accidentally. Otherwise this is a brilliant phone. Beautiful screen and everything just works quickly and easily. Presumably that monster processor has a lot to do with this. Oh, and it looks great.
