Samsung Galaxy S

G-Rating

Rating of 5

The basics

The Samsung Galaxy S is an Android 2.1-powered smartphone that sports Samsung's TouchWiz interface that gives it some sweet widget touches. The other big selling point is the gorgeous 4-inch AMOLED screen.

The good

With a 1GHz processor the Galaxy S offers speedy browsing through its menus and the beautiful 4-inch screen is a real gadget crowd-pleaser. Because it's AMOLED it's better, brighter and slimmer than many of its peers.

To make good use of this screen, the Samsung Galaxy S has excellent video playback. Where most Androids can play H.264, H.263 and WMV files, the Samsung Galaxy S can play just about everything. Divx, Xvid and MKV are all are welcome, and the quality of playback is great. Even 720p Divx and Xvid movies play without a hitch.

You can also record 720p HD video with the phone’s 5-megapixel camera too, and there’s video autofocus, making it a versatile little digicam.

The 16GB internal memory the Samsung Galaxy S gives you plenty of room. Not all of this memory can be used to install apps on, but with around 2GB of app space at your disposal, the Samsung Galaxy S has more room for apps than almost any other Android we’ve seen. When Android 2.2 lands, you’ll be able to use the full 16GB for apps.

The bad

The plasticy build lets the Galaxy S down slightly. It means that the Galaxy S is lighter than any of its main rivals, but it makes the phone feel less of a premium contender in the Android market. This phone isn’t cheap, in price or in the quality of its features so it'd be nice if the build reflected that.

The bottom line

Minor niggles aside, the Samsung Galaxy S outperforms most Androids in several areas, especially in video capability.

The Samsung Galaxy S is the best high end phone on the market, The 4" Super AMOLED screen is Samsungs latest technology with improvements over the standard AMOLED screen, Improved power consumption and around 80% better in direct sunlight so viewing and using the screen outside on a sunny day is no longer an issue. It really has to be seen in person to appreciate how good it is, when placed side by side with an iPhone 4 it makes the "Retina" display look dull in comparison. The screen size and widescreen ratio also make reading text very easy and it's perfect for watching widescreen standard or HD content on. But that’s not where it ends; this phone has a 1GHz Hummingbird CPU, 512MB of memory, video recording at 720p@30fps, a fully featured 5MP camera. Now remember this is Samsung, they know they to make cameras and both video and camera come with a wide array of settings and modes you can use and configure, plus HD TV OUT using USB to HDMI cable. Also comes with flashlite, so you can visit websites you simply can't with an iPhone or other android devices, you can update to version 10 once 2.2 is released in September. Last but not least, it also includes a Power VR SGX540 GPU which offers more than twice the graphics processing performance of the SGX535 which is used in the iPad and iPhone 4 so 3d gaming and HD video on this phone are silky smooth.

I sold my 3G S for this. Oh what a good choice. I prefer it by miles, it may have stolen a few ideas from the look of the iphone but for usability and overall features it is the phone to have right now.

I've been a Samsung phone user for many years, the pixon m8800 was ok for my first internet phone, price wise, but was always out shone by the iphone, When my contract was due for renewal in july I looked around for a good replacement phone, my nephew has always sung the praises of the iphone, as he's had the 3g then the 3gs, I hunted down all the new models of smart phone, read reviews, specs etc and was going to wait for the Iphone4, as it seemed to have it all, abet at a price, then the reports of problems with the iphone4 convinced me to stay away, anyway I stayed with samsung and got the Galaxy S, What a great piece of kit this phone is, I ordered the Zagg full Body kit to protect the gorgious screen and back of the Galaxy S, so the great looks should last a long time, Android is brilliant, plenty of good apps are available for free, I think theres an app to turn off 3G and use 2G if you wanted too, plus with this phone the Android can be updated to Frogo 2.2, Sept I think and its free, It has a very powerful operating system, Does more than I thought a phone could, Voice search being my favourite App, be it searching the web or for Navigation, its fantasic, I'm so glad I didn't fall into the apple trap, to top it all my Nephew is seriously thinking about the Galaxy S to replace his Iphone in a few months when his contract ends, Last week his Iphone 3GS wouldn't hold a charge, He's had to send it away to get the battery replaced, where as the Galaxy S takes seconds to change a battery, I've ordered a couple of spare replacement batts with wall charger, £12.00 I think it was, so if I do run the phone hard I will have the option to slip in a fully charged battery no matter where I happen to be, enough said I think, get the Galaxy S and ENJOY.

Just so we get the perspective right on cost: I got my SGS over 24 months with 300mins/300text/1GBinternet for a total of 510 pounds. HTC desire was 20 quid cheaper but wasn't available for over a month on the same bargain deal websites - which is a dealbreaker for me when iv'e got the gadet fever in my blood. iphone cheapest equivalent was 900 pounds.....

I have had the Galaxy S for about 6 wks now, love the phone, hate the battery life, but what do you expect when you just simply can't put the phone down. I love that you have to enter a pattern to unlock the phone rather than numeric code. Its not as hard to use as I first thought, even my 6 yr old can operate it. Has some pretty cool apps pre-installed 'Allshare' being one of my faves at the moment. Its so easy to snag files and photos from my lappy or desktop to my phone and vice versa. In my opinion, this is the best phone Samsung have ever brought out. Well done Samsung, glad I am not an iphone follower, i would of missed out on this smart android phone. 9/10

@Kate Villis you can use the pull down menu from the tip of the screen to manage all of your connections...wifi/bluetooth/3g etc. The only issue I have had is getting it to sync with my pc. That took me ages to find a soloution. It also seems like a lot of other users world wide have had the same issue. Other than that it's just a shame it has no flash on the camera. That aside I love it...screen clarity is awesome, the browsing speed is fantastic in comparison with my previous Nokia 5800 xpress music. Also the android app store is now rivalling Apple which is great.

It may be worth mentioning, which the reviewers did not, and that is the Samsung Galaxy S' screen uses Gorilla Glass! It's tough as nails, go on try knocking on the screen with you knuckles. Fantastic phone, I've had it for 2 days, and can't put it down.

bought 1 about 3 weeks ago as i've been a Samsung user for years. i'm not an iphone fan. have been using it and can only comment on 2 faults i can see: - 1) Samsung always seem to go out fo their way to make the message tone hard to change. i managed it but what a run around. 2) you have to make sure you actually press the "phone call end" because if you press the button at the bottom that ends everything else you do, it leaves your conversation running. apart from that, Video is awsome, pictures are good and the phone itself is well fast. so happy with it i have bought 2 more.

I have just got the galaxy s. I have had it for two days now and can't put it down. A friend of mine has got an iphone 4 and after playing with the galaxy s, now wishes he had the galaxy. Have always had nokia in the past but so glad I opted for the galaxy s. o nly one fault in my opinion, wish it had a flash on the camera. This is a real alternative to the iphone 4. Full marks to samsung! And swype has changed how I use my mobile forever.

Easy to use interface, large crystall clear screen that out performs the iPhone, not as many Apps as the iPhone but the market is improving. The iPhone4 is overpriced compared to the galaxy and is only worth the extra outlay if you are an Apple purist, so it's down to personal choice, they are no doubt the market leaders in the Android market.

Had the Galaxy S for a couple of weeks now. Swype is such a cool way to enter text. I got mine for free on a £20pm contract on vodafone so can't agree with the people moaning about the cost. Due to the fact I'm always using it at the moment the battery needs charging quite often but all the features are brilliant, notifications of things such as twitter and facebook work well.

I have around 14 phones these include htc, desire, legend, wildfire, hd mini, i have the i phone 3gs and i phone 4 the galaxy s, blackberry 8520, 9300, 9500, 9000, 8900 so have a varied knowledge of smartphones and must say i am seriously impressed with the galaxy s and would consider this to be a i phone killer, yes you can disable 3g by selecting to use just 2g and it still connects to the internet pretty quickly, also if you use task killer you can kill apps in the background that use the battery life i can get about 3 days usage out of mine before having to recharge, on all the above phones i have disbaled the 3gs to save the battery life and it works a treat the wildfire used to die in just under a day now it lasts at least 2 and a half days. the galaxy s is amazing too in the fact if you ave an led tv series 6 wireless enabled you can download an app to use as a remote control AMAZING and has to be the best phone i have used and owned apart from the acient nokia 6310i 5 day battery and that was with never being turned off needless to say i still have. well im sure theres plenty of you reading this either getting bored or thinking im a well leave that for you to fill in lol. take care all and enjoy whatever phone you have that works for you we can all suggest phones but its never going to be a one size fits all now is it.

Please google it. it is only £99(+£10 top-up) and it has android 2.1 (Éclair) And it is amazing, i cant wait till it comes. it has an OLED screen with wifi and all you need for a cheap smart phone. i think they should change the cheapest smart phone to the orange San Francisco. :)

Ok, had the Galaxy S now for about a month. Cost me about £430 as an unlocked phone . Screen is good - and being able to add a simm to it is very useful. The plastic case does mean that buying a protective cover is a must - I got a leather lined metal case for about £12. Also look into getting a prtective plastic covering for the screen. But basically a good , solid bet for an android phone

This Phone is a nightmare!!!! I have had two brand new Samsung Galaxy S upgrades within the space of 5 days. This first one had a faulty headphone jack socket, and only worked through one earpiece or 'No Earpieces', depending on how you jiggled it, but at no point did you get sound through both earpieces. I complained to the supplier and got an immediate replacement, only to find that the internal speaker was faulty, and therefore it was so faint, you could't hear anyone speak when either making or receiving a call!!!! I have had enough with this phone and lost faith. I have therefore insisted that it is replaced, but this time with an HTC Desire. I can't believe I have been so unlucky to get the only two faulty phones in circulation. Samsung's 'quality control' must be virtually none existant!

I have always been sony ericsson until nokia released the X6 which converted me and i then said i would never change from nokia but i just upgraded to the galaxy and the phone is stunning they use the same technology in this screen as they use in their t.v's i thought the screen was good in the nokia x6 untill i seen this galaxy i have got the 8gb model which is a good memory. But i think the only thing that lets this phone down is that there is no flash on the camera. Iknow its not a major thing but if u were out in the night and u wanted to take a quick pic andvthis is all u got then its a bit useless realy.

We upgraded to a GalaxyS phone and gave it back after 2 weeks. If you want to use it to make phone calls, text, use the internet, play games or watch video, it's definitely great and probably rivals the iphone. HOWEVER, if you want to get emails on POP3 or use bluetooth, don't bother. We set it up for emails and when one occasionally came in and I clicked to open it, it deleted it before I could read it. Thankfully, I could still get them on my computer. Also, bluetooth devices don't always work with it. It would connect then disconnect when you were talking. On top of this, you couldn't voice dial through your bluetooth and if you wanted to voice dial manually, you had to go through too many menus to get there. Gave up and went back to Blackberry.

Have had the phone for about a month now... and LOVE IT! Am only miffed that the guy at T-Mobile said it would play flash content (It doesn't), that I would have no problem with iPlayer, etc (I do!). Now I realize that some of these problems will be sorted by Android 2.2 but where is it!? T-Mobile said a few weeks from purchase (WRONG AGAIN!), then I heard '...end of October...', no, now I hear '...first few weeks in November...'. Does anybody know when it is due for release? Please!

Had the SGS about a month now. Totally excellent. Screen outperforms the iPhone retina display in every area. Just upgraded to Android 2.2 via Samsung as my phone is not simlocked. Completely trouble free and easy to do. The main selling points for me is I can do what I want with it with no interference or restrictions from Samsung. I can expand the memory if I choose to, I can change the battery if i choose to, I can completely personalise the device if I choose to. I find Apples control freakery annoying. As a consumer, what I do with a product once I have bought it is my choice to make not the manufacturers. The choice seems to be these days is whether to join the Apple flock or be an Android individual!

I've had this phone for a month now - and I think it's great and would not swap it for anything else - BUT: * Certain things available generally on Android seem to not be available for this phone as shipped (Eclair 2.1) - no flash support, no Skype, as two examples. * The Android update (Froyo 2.2) is available now, but only through the PC software "Kies" * Kies seems to have big connection problems - I have tried using four separate PCs now, all of which fail to detect and install the right drivers for the phone. The software reports "Connecting device..." forever. Internet searches on forums for solutions to this suggest that I am not alone in experiencing these problems. So, before you buy may I suggest that you make sure that it will be delivered with 2.2 pre-installed!

samsung galaxy s is a great phone but like the review says the plastic build quality realy lets it down, compare this to the samsung wave which is the phone i currently have the build quality is excellent but the apps you can down load lets its down however its a great phone, if they have improved the build quality with the galaxy s i would of brought one..after all we all expect a phone to take a few knocks and drops..

I recently exchanged a faulty (4 day old) HTC Desire Z for the Galaxy S! At first I was blown away by the vivid and sharp screen, superb! Having owned and used the phone for just over a month now I have to say I am glad I took the option to have the Samsung and not a replacement HTC. It is very easy to use and set up, the screen is responsive and the processor copes well although it can slow down a bit on occasion. The only criticisms I have are the lack of a flash for the camera, would have been handy and the poor battery. I have to charge mine every day and I am staggered that manufacturers bring out these feature packed handsets and then put batteries in them that just cannot deliver long term power which ideally you need to make full use of the many many features this phone has to offer. Great phone, best I've had and I'm very pleased with it, I would recommend it for sure.

Hi, I recently won a Galaxy S and couldn't be happier. It does everything I iphone4 does (just about) and probably just a s good with added features as well. I love the Swype texting. You don't take your finger off the screen to text. It means it very quick in deed. It is a shame that the Gadget Show didn't have it in the test for Best smartphone of the year because I think it would have beaten the iphone. I think the show is a bit biased to Apple products anyway.

A little difficult to hold in one hand if you're a girl with small hands. But otherwise great. Screen is wonderful and clear, never seen anything like it in a phone. And smudge and fingerprint free. Internet browsing is smooth and quick and the many apps make everything possible. I reccommend checking out a few "top android apps" to really get the best out of your phone as I browsed the android market for half an hour and still missed a lot of useful aps. Syncs with my google calendar and to-do list like a dream making it the perfect companion to my laptop, and later my tablet once I buy it! I've had a little difficulty with texting, hitting the wrong keys quite a lot, but that is probably because I'm not used it using it yet. Like any new phone. Media player is lovely and the memory is huge. Not fully tested the battery yet so can't comment but most jam-packed smartphones of today will only last a day. It's not acceptable but it's just how phones that can do so much are today. Especially is wi-fi and bluetooth is left on. I love the pull-down menu that comes from the top of the screen. VERY useful! It's little things like that that really make a phone. Something you'll use everyday and makes something so much quicker. A definate iPhone contended and for a much cheaper price. I got it free on £25 contract by going through Carphone Warehouse.
