Nokia 6303 Classic

G-Rating

Rating of 4

The basics

The Nokia 6303 Classic is a mid-level handset that rocks a 3.2-megapixel camera, Opera Mini for web-browsing, Nokia Maps and an extensive battery life. It also has a 2.2-inch 320x240-pixel screen. Best of all? It's cheap as David Dickinson's chips. It measures 108.8x46.2x11.7mm and weighs 96g.

The good

First things first, the Nokia 6303 Classic is cheap! Rocking up with a PAYG price of just £100, it's got enough features at a price that's good enough to keep you and your bank manager happy. It's not bad to look at either, with its brushed stainless steel styling more than capable of taking a knock or two. Granted it's no Land Rover S1, but what other phone is? The 3.2-megapixel camera's decent, if not amazing, taking good snaps in the light. Being a Nokia, it's a breeze to use too.

The bad

Yes, there are Nokia Maps, but there's no GPS onboard. Also, while the camera's decent, we certainly wouldn't recommend ditching your compact camera for this. Also the screen is a tad low-res for our tastes, and struggles to keep up with the typing at times.

The bottom line

As 'basic' phones go, the Nokia 6303 Classic is one of the better ones in terms of price, style and features.

A couple of months ago I drowned my Motorola RAZR. I would have liked to buy a direct up to date replacement for it but this turned out to be effectively impossible. (What HAS happened to Motorola?) Instead, after a bit of research and a look round the shops, I bought the Nokia 6303. Having lived with it for a while I have to say I'm delighted. It does everything I want from a phone plus a few things I didn't realise I wanted until I discovered them. It also looks nice in an understated and purposeful way. GPS would have been nice but I suppose optimistic at this price point. I would still prefer a really slim flip phone with a decent battery life but until such a thing becomes available I can highly recommend this phone.

I love this phone. It does what it does well and if, like me, you can't seem to get comfortable with touch screens then this is the one to go for. I upgraded to a 4G card (ridiculously cheaply) and dumped my i pod. Style, function and reliability.

The 6303 has a great FM (RDS & AF) radio and the sound from the mp3 player is better than my ipod nano. It has a 3.5mm jack which allows the use of 'proper' earphones. The pre-installed Opera mini browser makes for quick & easy viewing of web pages and although it doesn't have in-built gps it pairs seamlessly with bluetooth gps receivers. The camera is not the best around but perfectly adequate for a phone. The above can be said for many phones at this price point but very few of them will also be as solidly built (it's got a steel shell) and provide excellent in-call clarity in such a small package.

I know the gadget show is about super high tech wizardry - i don't have much money though and with a bog standard and i mean about forty pounds nokia phone from O2 you can send free emails instead of paying for texts. Well obviously i do still send texts also. More than emails by phone.

Nokia have lost the plot they can't even make a good simple candy bar phone anymore why don't they just concentrate on their core products ...?
