Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
The basics
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a multimedia smartphone that comes with a range of features for media and music. It comes with a range of features such as 3.2 megapixel camera, 16:9 widescreen for movies and and A-GPS and Wi-Fi for navigation and Internet browsing. It'll also play a range of music files such as MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA audio files and has storage of up to 16GB.
The good
It’s narrower, lighter and cheaper than an iPhone, has memory cards so you’re not stuck with the on-board storage and a sharper 3.2-inch touchscreen that’s made for nimble Euro fingers rather American sausage digits. The 5800’s new S60 software is faster than ever, with a built-in HSDPA browser that can surf Flash websites and a media player that handle AAC, Windows Media and H.264 files. The 3.2MP snapper kicks sand in the face of the iPhone’s paltry 2MP camera and even the built-in stereo speakers have plenty of poke to hum along to. Naturally, there’s also GPS, an accelerometer, Bluetooth and picture messaging.
The bad
Virtually nothing, although browsing and navigation isn’t as baby-oil smooth as the iPhone. The 5800 is the first S60 5th edition handset so it’s early days for apps right now.
The bottom line
Want a touchscreen handset for music and movies but can’t be arsed with the whole iPhone hassle? The 5800 is ca racking phone at a sensible price – and could become unmissable once its new S60 software gets some decent apps.

I'm writing this email on my 5800. This phone is awesome. I love the fact it's smaller then the iphone. Not fussed about apps as most are a waste of time. Web browersing is nice and quick, plus i don't need to be part of the apple cult to have killer phone.

I bought this phone for myself off ebay for £150. Both the music and video quality is great. the only problem is that the programs sometimes take a while to load

Great job with the gadget show guys, loving it. Currently in the process of returning my N97. Poor sound quality, keeps freezing and takes ages to open applications. 5800 + xpress music sounds like a definate winner.

i got this phone on contract when it came out, and since then all i have had is trouble with it it freezes, its laggy, it turns itself off and it has to be updated at home with a computer, which isnt told to you when you buy it, since then i have had a replacement phone which has also broken as it was a 3rd party phone, i am aparently not entitaled to a brand new phone and i am not happy with this the replacement phone also cant read my memory card, which i am not happy with at all, and it itsnt just me that has had these problems, i was informed by the staff at carpohne wearhouse that nokia rushed this phone through the making progress and that is why the first few batches are laggy. :(

I've had this phone since May and it's been awesome. Ok there have been a few bugs but nothing the latest firmware update hasn't fixed. And after installing Fring for my instant messaging and Skype calls(a free download from the Fring website by the way) it got even better!! Love love love love love it!!

Had phone since launch day in the uk, Love the phone have had no problems with it, music and video easily stand up against the iphone and with the significant difference in price a must have for budget buyers! In responce to 'jordan' i work for one of the major mobile networks in the uk and yes the first few batches were rushed and had faults bit since then all new handsets seem to be working fine.

Has anyone used the camera on this phone yet? Its shocking! I've upgraded from the N95 and the photos, especially in lower light are so grainy. Anyone else found this?

I have to agree with Jordan above. I had this phone less than three weeks and what started out with 'normal' programme-lag ended up with me needing a replacement phone. I was not told at this point that I could change to a different model phone, so when the second phone also crashed I was stuck. It stops working and the screen freezes any time the battery gets low, and also just randomly when it feels like it. The mapping system provided is rubbish, and the upgrade software is clunky and causes the phone to crash even more often. The only good thing about it is the loud speakers, but you sometimes can't get the headphone sound to go low enough. Every day I wish I had gone for the iPhone.

great phone i got mine a few months ago after my mates dad got one as i was so impressed, then my dad went and got one aswell, then his mate got one, its so good its started a chain reaction. the phone is basicly a cheaper better version of the iphone but without the name, instead its good ald reliable nokia. i would recomend to anyone but i am a bit disapointed with the camera only being 3.2megapixels. overall the best phone i know in existance.

I've had nokia 5800 since june it's been an excellent phone but has major problems. When installing apps or themes on phone it uses the phone memory to install it to. When you uninstall it, it will never delete off the memory and you can't delete or find it. This also applies to the internet when you visit site's it automatically saves images to your phone memory which you can't remove it, even clear private data does get she of it all. If you download this app called x-plorer (phone file management app) you get to see all the files that you don't need and takes up your memory. The other issue i have had is with real player sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't and it has certificate problems other wise if your not into apps or themes its a ace phone must buy

bought this for 14.95 on an 18 quid tarriff on virgin with unlimited internet access and it is a wicked phone am used to sony ericsson but took bit of getting used to the lack of keyboard buttons but love the stylus but the plectrum is much more convenient and easy accessible. response times are good and downloads from the internet are amazingly fast just wish the manufactures would include screen protectors as standard in these phone kits . that aside all round so far a good phone. I have an itouch and if it was an iphone ( same size) i would hate having that thing lumping round in my pocket.

Had this phone since launch and have to say it is the BEST phone I have ever owned. Great loud speakers (never heard my old samsung G600 ringing!), came with 8gb mem card - have nearly 2 days worth of music on and still have LOADS of space left. Oh, and it hasn't slowed the phone down. Touchscreen is very very good although not quite iphone quality, but iphone more money! Takes good vids too. Camera great in daylight but not so good in low light conditions. I wanted a phone that I could text on easily and this is perfect. My old G600 could not keep up with my texting and froze constantly. My 5800 has no probs coping with fast texting, plus you can use qwerty or handwriting recognition facilty as well as usual keypad style. I highly recommend this phone - I've had no probs at all and I have dropped it twice! A tough, user friendly mobile. Well done Nokia!

I own a nokia 5800 after previously owning an iphone 3gs and i have to say that i prefer the nokia, i think that the iphone is to big i struggle to text on it and the internet can be very slow and its to expencive. I think that the nokia fits in your hand perfectly the apps off Ovi are ok not great but are ok. And i think that music wise this has to be the best phone out there. Nokia 5800 is the iphone killer!

My only gripe is the inconsistency of the menu, some screens you single tap an icon and then some you have to double tap. Why not have a consistent method. Other than that a brilliant little fone.

I've had mine since Feb 09. It's totally brilliant and has a build quality second to none. Once you get to it you'll be glad you never bought a poxy iphone. I recommend getting a copy of Garmin navigator XT if you don't buy the navigator version. I've just got the standard xpressmusic version but pay a bit extra and you'll get the comes with music version. The only downside to this phone in my opinion is the camera. 3.2mp should still give you excellent photo's. But even with all the latest firmware updates my camera is totally pants. I think it may have something to do with having an extremely small apeture which will never be solved by firmware updates. Even with the later in mind I would still give this jewel 9 out of 10.

I have had the 5800 for two months now, Good point;Light, nice colour, crisp graphics, great music player, youtube, maps, bbciplayer Bad points; apps are in the early stages nowhere near iphone app store, internet crashes and returns you to the home screen(very annoying) cannot text quickly as it does not quite keep up with your speed, no flash player to access facebook apps on the go, which is a shame because the nokia e63 can use skyfire browser which is by far the best browser. on the whole a nice allrounder, but I think I will end up saving up to buy an iphone in the end.

bluetooth connection to parrot kits is hopeless. Cuts you off before you can say hello more times than not. Out in the sun the screen goes black and you can't see any of the touch screen buttons. Kept it for three weeks and then had to revert to the old phone. An expensive mistake. Good for toys in doors, but no good as a work phone!!

Upgraded from the brilliant N95 8gb a few months ago and the 5800 is superb and very under-rated. Much quicker than the N95 and I have had no problems with it at all, never failed me. Use it mostly as a music player and the sound is incredible, very clear and well...just works! I did upgrade to an iPhone 3GS originally however I was very dissapointed with the phone side of it. Battery was lasting a day if I use it as a smart phone and kept dropping signal. I got Ipod touch so can use nearly all the same apps anyway. 5800 is a much better phone and free on a £20 orange tariff (comes with music) so much better value. Just a couple of things though, keep the software updated and the Opera web browser is much more user friendly.

had my nokia 5800 for about a year now and im still loving it:) i love the new version of nokia ovi maps as it has free satalite navigation- its so good i would even say its getter than the offerings of tom-tom and its friends :) i love all the free app's and the ovi store is growing day by day. its also really robust- i work as a handyman and ive dropped it countless times from even 7feet and more on to concrete and its survived with minimal scratch's to the case :D the screen and everything about it is a million times better than the samsung tocco- my last phone that was simply horrible to use:( 10/10

The camera on the 5800 is identical to the onoe on the 6500 slide which I had before this one, appart from a dual flash. The camera is trash compared to the 6500, which if I remember right came first in one of your tests. it's a shame the because the phone is fine, and the video is great.

The phone looks great :) I was going to get an iPhone, but i've just bought an iPod Touch for £150 from Argos, and that has everything the iphone does aside from Voice control and calling abilities. So i see little sense in getting an iPhone as well. It's interesting looking at reviews when thinking about getting something. Both Jon on the GadgetShow and Edward from 'Trustedreviews.com' don't really recommend the phone, but everyone i've asked that has one (and plenty people seem to) love the thing. It's probably better to seek the opinion of everyday people with the phone, than base it on critical professionals. Although obviously they're opinions are influential :)

A feature that I am really impressed with is the Ovi maps, when used in conjunction with my Jawbone Aliph Noise Assasin headset. Instructions come through loud and clear on the headset. Giving clear instructions to the driver. Say if you're navigating on a busy Gyratory/Roundabout in an unfamiliar area, clear, precise instructions are voiced through the headset only. Cutting down on battery use on the moblie itself! Prefer the voice to TomTom, look forward to seeing what updates and how the software develops. TomTom have made some mistakes with their software. For example, a postcode entered used to take me to within 50-150 yards maximum of my destination i.e. a house name in the countryside on a road with no name. Now it will ask you for a house number, do they not realise that most houses in the countryside don't have a number. Extremely frustrating when providing a courier service. Still got lots to discover with Nokia and Ovi. Hopefully they will provide an itinerary planner with at least 30-40 way-points. Would be be very good indeed!

This is a cracking phone. I've been living with it for almost a year and still love it. It's an entertainment system in my pocket. Upgrading the operating system was easy even a relatively un-techy person like me. I would recommend this phone wholeheartedly if you're on a budget - although I'm dying to get my hands on the Nokia X6.

An absolutely superb fone. Had for nearly 2 years. Never let me down. One of the few phones that has a graphic equaliser which is why i bought it. Sound quality is super (no need for ipods etc). To improve this phone, nokia only really need to bring the sound up a notch and include a 5mp xenon flash equipped camera. This phone has the same cam as the 6500 slide (which was rated brilliant by the Gadget show) yet it doesn't seem to be as brilliant mounted on this phone 4 some reason - is it the software. It can take great pics, but only in good light (grainy other times). All in all 4/5 mr stars ;-)
