LG watchphone
The basics
It's a watch. It's a phone. It's a watchphone! This is the most obviously futuristic piece of tech that we've seen this year, and what's more, it actually works. But £500 is a lot to stump up for a tech novelty.
The good
The LG GD910 watchphone is one of the coolest gadgets we’ve clapped eyes on this year. It's undoubtedly a sleek piece of kit that makes you look like a spy or a spaceman. Or both.
As a lowly timepiece it really cuts it and as a phone, it actually works really well.
Video calls are handled over HSDPA, and taking calls on that 1.43–inch touchscreen gives you a real buzz, especially when tech illiterate types are strolling past. It’s even good for firing off texts and the Bluetooth works just as expected, giving you MP3s and hands–free calls like a regular blower.
The bad
The price is just too hard to swallow. Yes, there’s the novelty factor. But the fact that you’d pay next to nothing for a cell of this standard down at your local Orange store means justifying the LG GD910 watchphone is difficult.
There’s absolutely no doubting it will get you stack loads of cool points, but it’ll be outdated 6 months into your 18-month commitment.
The voice recognition is weak (it couldn’t even understand the word ‘yes’) and there's no SD slot, so you have no room for those MP3s thanks to the paltry 80MB memory.
The bottom line
OK, the LG GD910 watchphone will make you look like Dick Tracey. And if you can afford it, hell, why not. But if you want a real phone with hefty features, this most certainly isn’t for you.
