iPhone 4

The basics

The iPhone 4.0 sees the series given its first proper re-vamp since its launch. The looks have been given an update and there are a few new features never seen on an iPhone. Does it make a worthy successor to the iPhone 3GS?

The good

The new iPhone 4 design have made this the thinnest smartphone ever, at 9.3mm. The front and back have been given a gorgeous glass finish that makes it feel like the poshest smartphone on the market too.

The Retina display screen is perhaps the most noticeable improvement – the 960×640 pixel screen is the sharpest we've seen on a mobile. Some apps have already been updated to make use of the high-res screen, and they look suitably impressive.

The other main addition to the iPhone 4 is the front-facing camera, mainly for use in FaceTime, the built-in video chat app. You can only call other iPhone users, over Wi-Fi, at the moment.

The CPU’s more powerful, making browsing through images etc as slick as your finger can manage. The new five megapixel camera may sound relatively tame, but we’ve been impressed with the quality of image the iPhone 4 offers. Autofocus is quick, detail is sharp and there’s finally a flash.

The iPhone 4 also records at up to 720p quality and touch focus works in video, making it even more useful.

The bad

You're still given virtually no control over your photos – no quality choice, no ISO selection, which is a shame. Similarly, video eschews any advanced controls.

Apple is still not willing to give the user as much freedom as, say, Android users.

There have also been reported antenna issues, but Apple may soon be releasing a software update to address these.

The bottom line

If you're an Apple fan, this is quite simply the best iPhone yet. Its looks, screen and functionality make this one seriously desirable handset.

A great phone but does have the signal issues that have been reported. This is solved by one of the cases/Bumper. If you hammer your supplier then you can get it for free just quote terms and condidtions and so forth they soon give in and when this is fitted the phone is world class. I had the 3g before this and this is worlds above.

2 years ago I bought an iPhone 3G. After years of switching brands and models I finally found a phone that I could not imagine wanting to change. I was able to upgrade on 24th June to the iPhone 4 and I am unchanged in opinion. The iPhone is the best combination of functionality, beauty, pleasure in using and build quality of any smartphone on the market. I also have had no reception issues. The GPS is improved and the video quality and clarity are amazing.

Have had my iphone 4 for nearly 2 weeks and can't sing it's praises highly enough. Everything it does, it does brilliantly and not once have I had the reported issues with poor signal. It truly lives up to the hype!

"There have also been reported antenna issues, but Apple may soon be releasing a software update to address these." They may be releasing a software update, but it does not and cannot fix the antennae issue which is a hardware problem. Apple have done a good job of muddying the waters around this issue which they can only fix by recalling the millions of phones out there and replacing them. It seems that the Gadgetshow have fallen for Apples story as you were meant to. Please do a bit more research on this matter and don't just take Apples word for it. They have released a pig. Apple are like the Emperor with his new clothes on this but none of you apple fan gadget sites are prepare to shout that he is naked. Grow a set and tell Apple they are wrong.

You give this phone 5 Gs and say it's the best smartphone despite the reception problems and about a say a software update coming to fix the problem even though the update is for different issue altogether.I ordered one for me and my brother but I was able to cancel the order when I realised you gave false information and the Iphone cannot perform it's basic function which is getting reception and making calls. You guys need to get back to making unbiased and great reviews

Just a quick comment about the pricing, the iphone 4 is £499.99 if bought directly from Apple (as I just have!) rather than the £600-£969 mentioned

I am some what concerened with the lack of addressing some of the issues I have come accross on this review, signal strenght and battery life neither mentioned. I have an iphone 3g and I am looking to upgrade so when the iphone 4 came along I thought great. However until the signal strenth is addressedI will hold fire. A friend is also complaining that the battery is discharging quickly while on standby a loss of 17% overnight, this despite apples claims that battery life on this iphone has been improved. I will probarly get an iphone 4 but latter.

I got the iPhone 4 on launch day (24 June). I was glad I qued from 6:15am for it :) Previous to the iPhone 4, I had the 3GS. With the option of the Early Upgrade offer O2 had running, I decided to go for the iPhone 4. Firstly, the style/design. Has per usual with Apple products they have stunning good looks and the iPhone 4 is no exemption. The stainless steel banding and the metal volume and sleep/wake buttons make for a gorgeous looking device. Steve Jobs described the appearance and build of the iPhone 4 to be like an old Leica camera, and I have to agree with him. Now on to the new Retina screen. All I can say is wow. The extra detail, crispness that you get especially when viewing small text is amazing. Whereas on the 3GS, you would need to zoom in somewhat to be able to read the same small text, with the Retina screen there is no need to. Video, pictures, album artwork on the iPod all appear MUCH sharper than on the 3GS. The camera on the iPhone 4 is 5 megapixel. I have to say the extra detail that is captured compared to the 3GS camera is a hell of a lot better. I would go as far as saying it’s the best camera I have used on any phone/Smartphone. Also the HD video quality is amazing too. The new improved battery on the iPhone 4 is considerably more longer lasting than the battery on the 3GS I find. Then you have the ability to be able to surf the internet wherever you are and write, send and check for email too (had long as you have network coverage obviously). The Safari browser on the iPhone is superb. Having used a Blackberry, I have yet to find a site that would not load up on the iPhone, whereas with the Blackberry they were a number of sites that would not load up. This is down to the iPhone having a proper web browser (Safari). Then you have the iPod built into the iPhone/iPhone 4. Basically you have the iPod Touch built into the iPhone/iPhone 4. The touchscreen operation of the iPod is so easy to use, and arguable has to be the most user friendly and easy to use media player (has it is possible to play video has well has MP3/audio with the iPod. Then there is the App Store. Basically, there is no other Smartphone, that has as much support with Apps has the iPhone has. It is possible to do almost anything with the aid of an App. The prices of the Apps are very cheap. For example, I have two games I downloaded, one game cost me 59p and the other cost 99p, and for the price they are ridiculously good value for money and the addictiveness of the games is superb, but there is more than games in the App Store, A LOT MORE BELIEVE ME! I have no issues with the antenna. In fact I find I get a slightly better signal on the iPhone 4 compared to the 3GS I previously owned. I especially find that I can hold on to a 3G signal longer on my iPhone 4 than I could on my 3GS. Basically the iPhone 4 has everything. Fair enough you can get other smartphones that are perhaps better at doing a certain thing than the iPhone 4. But in my opinion the iPhone 4 does all very well. If you want a Smartphone, then hand on heart, I do not think you can get any better than the iPhone 4, its an outstanding, superb smartphone.

The screen is to small and the screen ratio is completely wrong for watching widescreen content on. This plus Apples annoying user limitations and antenna issues, I would only give it four stars.

Reception- Call quality- Browser speed test (even let the galaxy run in Flash on mode)- Navigation test- Camera test (HD video and stills)- Multimedia format test- Screen visibility test (in daylight and view angle)- Battery life test- Gaming test- Scratch test- Drop test- Non sim handset price test-

I just bought a Iphone 4. which is the first time ever buying an apple product and i must say it is one of the most impressive smartphones i have ever used .. it feels soo firm and expensive in your hand although it is quite heavy but i enjoy a heavier phone as i feel i wont drop it as easily.. the camera is truely awesome.. although it is only 5 megapixel it can take much better photo's than phones which have a higher MP. although there has been a lot of news about antenna problems i myself live in a poor signal strength area and am having no problems with my Iphone 4 signal .. would definetly recomment this phone to anyone wishing to buy a phone alothough it is fairly expensive

having owned all i phones from launch i must say that the latest launch was rather clumsy not enough micro sims available antenna issue and guess what calls are droping even more with the latest software update im a mobile phone engineer and repair blackberry nokias etc etc and trust me there is an issue with the latest update my iphone 4 is dropping calls since the update and so is my directors 3g phone. the antenna issue is not a problem all phones lose signal held in certain ways so i presume theres alot of iphone bashing going on its a shame because this is a great product well made and classy shame the whole launch was rather clumsy in my opinion and should of been handeled alot better hurry up and sort the software issues out

After my year old 3GS, I deliberated between Android and iPhone and chose the iPhone 4. It ain't 5 stars (maybe not even 4 with all that's missing) but at least you'll know that a better all rounder isn't yet invented. There's no flash player, you can't edit media or manage files, you can't even bluetooth them and there's next to no customisation - hardly 5 stars! It's no revolution and doesn't really change anything again, basically because the 3GS with iOS4 has pretty much everything. The only new things are a boxier shape and sharper display. Video calls sometimes work with Fring. You probably won't notice the rest. Battery life's about the same as the 3GS, camera's about the same too, no matter what they say on paper. As I said, more of the same but that's because the 3GS was already a really good phone.

Had my i phone for two weeks now and am absolutely delighted with it. It's my first i phone and is everything and more than expected. Apps brilliant, camera brilliant, video brilliant. Two slight minuses; battery life is not as good as expected and signal strength if held in the left hand. I've found a brilliant way to get round this; hold it in the right hand. Highly recommended but have also heard good things about the Samsung Galaxy. Would have liked to have seen a head to head face off before buying but decided to trust the apple.

I feel Jon's test was very bias towards the iPhone 4. I have a HTC Desire and it's amazing, All my friends have iphones (including the iPhone 4) and my desire is quicker under most circumstances. An example is sitting in a pub garden and turning on GPS and Google maps. From a standing start the Desire finds it's location, and zeros in a good 2 - 3 minutes quicker than the iPhone 4 Jon was a relative noob in terms of using either phone, so of course it he would be slower. He pointed out the keyboard wasn't as responsive, but that's the great thing about android... if you don't like the defaults, then change them. I didn't like the standard keyboard, so I changed it to "Swiftkeys" which learns from your style of typing, and 80% of the time can guess the next word by the context of your message. The same applies with the Media player, and just about every other bit of the operating system. Also Jon was using a desire running Android 2.1, I would like to see them redo the test once 2.2 has been released and Jon has had a bit of practice. I think then that we would see a much closer race, maybe even a victory for the Android Camp. If someone was to give me an iPhone 4 I wouldn't refuse, I do think they are a masterpiece of design. But I wouldn't go and pay good money for one, when the Desire is just as capable, and isn't tied to the applications, and services that Apple tell you.

This is my 1st iphone as i was not impressed by other iphones, Saw that iphone 4 was coming out and my contract was out the day before. So i fault i'd give it ago and que for 5hrs. I can say it was worth the 5hrs wait and will not change from iphone now you can do so much with it. Roll on iphone 5.

I don't have an iPhone4 and never have had an iPhone, but do want one and will be getting one when my current N97 contract runs out (which incidentally is a truly awful 'smart'phone). However i do totally agree with the above comment from my fellow Richard (Lowery), Comedy Dave was obviously going to be a lot quicker in the tests as he's a self confessed iPhone lover and has used them for years. In addition, on last night's show Jason stated the iPhone4 couldn't yet be given a 5 G rating, yet this review gives it 5 Gs, so which one is it TGS? You used to be my bible for all things gadge, but now you're getting really rather sloppy.

A very disappointing test by Jon based on a tiny number of tasks that were as much to do with the user's ability as the phone. Did they deliberately go out and find a poor camera phone for that test rather than pick one from one of the manufacturers who are actually good at it. As for the style 'test' how many people picked the old style iPhone as that is what they have been trained to believe is cool? A poor test when there are so many phones that would give the iPhone a fight it probably wouldn't win.

why does this show love the iphone 4 so much, the htx desire is the better phone especially with the froyo update which has just been released. The iphone got a full review on web tv and a full review on the actual gadget show. The desire got a poor review on web tv and was part of the comparison with the iphone. Jon was up against some guy nodody has ever heard of, and it was an unfair test because jon was a really slow typer!!!!

When are they going to do a fair comparison of the best Google can do, Nexus One/Desire and the best (snigger) that Apple can do, iPhone 4 without being totally biased towards the iPhone? This phone should never have had 5 G's, for one thing Flash Player!! Thats a big percent of the internet you will never be able to use.

Have to say I was pretty disappointed with the one-eyed i-phone 4 review in last night's show. None of the phone's much publicised issues were properly addressed (only a brief mention to them after the review piece). I would imagine many prospective owners would be very keen to see a test on the i-phone's call/signal performance (making calls is afterall a central function of a phone) instead they get a rather pointless cool test?! Also how can the i-phone be the best smartphone out there when it has issues making/holding calls???

I got the iphone4 and loved its looks and apps. Unfortunately the signal were I live was diabolical despite Orange telling me it was very good. I downloaded the update 4.1 and still no difference regarding signal. I took the sim out of the iphone and using the adaptor placed it in my old Nokia and the my Samsung, low and behold I had a signal. Put it back in the iphone and it dissapeared again. Orange have told me that they know that the phone has a problem but they have to sell it otherwise they would lose market share due to its popularity. I can understand that and personally understand where they are coming from. Anyhow, it arrived on a Tues and it was back in its Jiffy bag on theThurs. Two of my friends have sent theirs back and they are on Vodaphone and O2. Seems it could be the phone that is at fault but just don't tell Steve at Apple. By the way, agree with earlier posts, what are the gadget show doing giving this five G's, doesn't do their reputation much good given the problems that this phone seems to have in certain area's on certain networks. They are quite well documented. Get your act together guys, you are letting both us and yourselves down.

i had the iphone4 for less than a week, and i was utterly unimpressed with the serious design flaw, that of the antenna. i had dropped calls, emails and text messages that would not send due to very poor signal reception. the upshot of all that is that the phone has now been returned to apple and my contract canceled. the iphone 4 looks great but the main purpose of a mobile phone, is that it can actually make and receive calls, which mine failed to do. i wouldnt have another iphone 4. not even if it was free, and suzy perry hand delivered it....well...maybe

As usual the TV review was biased tosh. Jon obviously cannot use a phone at speed so of course Comedy Dave would be faster. You need to compare like for like, say the Galaxy S, befor misleading consumers into buying into Apples controlled universe........ No way of increasing storage. Cant replace the battery. Bluetooth music or set music as ringtones. View Flash content. Use anything but Itunes. Signal issues...... The list is endless and the only reason why you cannot do the above is to line Apples pockets with even more money. What Jon never talked about were the contract costs, which are far to high as the phone is just a fashion accesory with some tech thrown in.....rant over

Dave

I think the iphone 4 will be looking dated quite soon. Android 2.2 is rolling out to existing phones which is faster than 2.1 and has flash 10.1. (HTC Desire is now on 2.2) Iphone users have a question mark for flash video and will do for a long time to come if apple don't change. Not the best internet experience any more. 2.2 has wifi hot spot I have tried this and it works really well password protected and you can limit the number of connections. You can't change the battery on the iphone. With glass front and back I can't see it surviving a drop. The apple app store makes the iphone 4 a great phone but if you look at the Google android conference on youtube you will see they have new ideas in the pipeline like buying an app on your pc then sending a message to your phone and it downloads automatically. A web based market and an update to 3.0 maybe in January, things will move on once more.

I have an IPhone 4 and its absolutely brilliant, when you hold it by the so called "death grip" it only looses some signal, therefore the reason why people are dropping calls is not just because of the antenna issue but poor signal in their area meaning phone companies should have some of the blame

I bought the iPhone 4 the day it came out but had to wait until the following Tuesday to receive it. In this time the internet was plagued with problems people had discovered with the phone and I wondered if I was going to regret my decision. Having received the iPhone and been using it for over a month I must say that I haven't found any of the so called major issues to be a problem. I like many others are actually unable to recreate the signal loss problems no matter how hard I try. My volume buttons were the correct way around, there was no yellow spots on the screen. So far all I have to say negatively about this phone is that in low light conditions I found that the flash created orangey-yellow photos. I resolved this problem by resetting the phone and now I get perfectly coloured photos even in low light, The screen will scratch relatively easy as I have noticed a few smal scratches just from everyday use but it was never advertised as scratch proof. Overall I've found the iPhone 4 a pleasure to use and the screen is unbelievabley sharp and colourful and the most responsive screen I've ever used. Overall 9/10

shame on you for the continual iphone bias, the htc desire in my opinion was delibrately not shown to its full potential 1. whilst typing the IP4 was shown using a full keyboard (landscace mode) desire has this but was shown only in portrait. 2.when it came to the camera IP4 and its 5mp camera was used against a different phone motorola 3mp where the desire has the following "Camera5 megapixel color camera Face detection capability Auto focus and flash Widescreen photo capture Geotagging" in all an android phone has more capabilities as its not hancuffed by its sole producer. we gadget geeks depend on your honest and open oppinions sadly this was not the case this time. ps maybe jason should compare the ip4 against the desire or other android phone when android 2.2 froyo hits.

I have just updated from a Blackberry Storm to the new iPhone4 on the Vodafone network. To be honest I have tried to get the new iPhone to drop it's signal by holding it in all sorts of ways and have been unable to create the issue. However when making calls you can sometimes mute the phone by touching the screen during a call with your cheek. Having said this the new iPhone 4 is excellent and it has to be the best phone I have owned. I am a complete convert to iPhone. I know that some people have niggles with the iPhone but to be realistic all mobile phones have some functions or features that will not suit everyone. I use my phone for personal and business use and fine it to be superb overall for both tasks. If anyone asked me I would say get one :-)

The keyboard Jon needs for the HTC Desire is called Smart Keyboard Pro $2.99. It is the same as the iphone keyboard, the predictive text is better, I type twice as fast with it. They used the Desire with 2.1 it was updated on Sunday to 2.2 try it at a shop before you go down the apple route.

The iPhone 4 has a great spec on paper, and while there are some short comings, overall however the Apple iPhone is currently the best touchscreen smartphone on the market. There may be some small aspects where Android powered devices may excel, but as an all around and overall picture, the Apple interface offers the best experience.

Ive now had this iphone4 for three weeks, I previously had the iphone (first one) I have had so many problems with this phone its unreal. and not one company will take any responsibility. Ive even tryed giving it back and they wont take it. I find it slow, have issues with the signal, apps wont work properly, one night it switched itself off and wouldnt turn back on till the morning, whilst talking my face seems to 'cut' my callers off. It may be the BEST phone on the market but i muched prefered the previous Iphone and had not one problem with it.

I brought the iPhone 4 on the day of launch and must say, it is the best smart phone I have ever used. All functions are amazingly fast thanks for the A4 Processor and despite reports, I have had no signal issues. I never used to be an Apple fan, but ever since using the iPhone (3G at first) I have been converted. It really is the most straight forward phone on the market and despite other phones have more features, the features the iPhone have are done right! I.e. Multi-tasking, 5MP Camera (Excellent quality) and 720p HD Video @ 30 fps (also excellent quality). Overall, I would give this phone 5G's! This is just my opinion though. I have no doubt some people will put down the iPhone 4, although I also have a feeling that the vast majority of those people don't and have never owned an iPhone...

Jon Bentley has once again shown his bias towards the iphone. He was testing the new phone against the HTC Desire for only one item, when he went to do the camera test he used another phone instead of the same HTC with its 5MP camera and face recognition. This is the reason I have issues with this program. just admit you have no intention of doing any test against any product that could possibly beat an apple device. I don'y understand how you can possibly test a device against different devices on its many functions, without giving each device a fair chance. Why don't you test it against the HTC Desire on all functions and then let people decide, rather than convincing everyone that the iphone is the best? but then, you'll never read this message or listen to what I have to say, after all, I'm not rooting for apple am I?

If iPhone 5 doesn't have flash 10.1 the iPhone will lose market share. Doesn't look too bad on the HTC Desire. bbc.co.uk/news/technology-10947784

By far the best phone I've ever owned, and better signal quality in central London than on my old Blackberry Bold 9000, despite the purported signal issues. I've had it since launch and and had 0 problems with it. The only slight issue was waiting for some apps to upgrade to IOS4 compatibility. The signal worries have, IMHO been totally overblown in the media. Myself and several of my friends, who have the Iphone4 have been able to replicate the signal issue (i.e. getting it down to 1 bar) when we try, but in day to day use we haven't actually experienced any problems. Therefore you have to wonder what all the fuss was about. Hardly anyone has returned them, and the 4 is still causing queues at major Apple stores. For all the criticism of Apple causing hype over the 4, the reality seems to be the media and Apple Haters (Android Nerds etc) were responsible for hyping up a supposed problem that in reality hardly affected anyone. On the whole though, totally blows the competition away. Pretenders to the throne of best smartphone, such as the HTC Desire and Samsung Galaxy S, and Android as an OS, just do not compete. Iphone 4 FTW!

As an employee within the mobile phone industry I can agree with a lot of the comments on here, especially regarding iphone 4. The phone looks fantastic and the interface is and has always been very easy to use. The signal issues are well documented. Apple have released a free bumper that resolves the issue of the signal being affected by how the phone is held. When researching this flaw apple discovered that the software itself was also giving inaccurate signal information (for example it was showing 4 bars when actually it would only be receiving 2/3) and released a software update to 'fix' this. NOTE: THIS SOFTWARE DOES NOT IMPROVE NOR HINDER SIGNAL COVERAGE, ONLY WHAT SIGNAL THE PHONE IS DISPLAYING!!! That's as far as I know, the situation regarding the issues. I have an iphone 3GS and I love it, it does what I want it to do perfectly well. Having recently received the Samsung Galaxy S in stock and having used it I can honestly say that this is the first handset that has truly had me contemplating a shift away from apple. The display is stunning, android works fantastically well and is so fast and responsive on this phone. I can't help but feel that with previous android phones the software was almost too much for the phones to handle but finally it seems the OS is getting the hardware it deserves (I might add that the desire is equally as good android). There are a lot of features that the iphone doesn't allow and customisation is severely limited when compared to other OS's. However, there are some corrections that need to be made when comparing android with iOS4! Neither can bluetooth music, android can bluetooth some media (not music) via a third party app but in order to do so the user has to browse through the folders of the destination phone (rather than being sent them), this seems slightly insecure. You can use music as ringtones on the apple OS, however it requires a long winded process on a computer beforehand to do so. Although google let the shackles off a lot more on there software than apple, security is more of an issue. Without the strict rules that are applied to developers apps, such as on apples app store (albeit some mystifying and petty), there is a larger ocean of useless, buggy and potential insecure apps that clutter up googles android market. Of course, this has it's benefits of unlocking further benefits of the handsets you pay good/far too much money for but without proper vigilance it can lead to potential security risks and in some extreme instances could leave some information vulnerable. Overall I think Google has caught up fast with apple over the last year (only accelerated further by apples problems with their recent handset) and their latest Android OS is a joy to use. However, Apples iOS4 is still just about the one to beat in terms of ease of use and simplicity, not to mention the security that is consistent with all apples products (Mac's themselves are know to have very few viruses compared to PC's). It's a close call and one I luckily have plenty of time to think about until my contract expires next year, all I can say is apple better be pulling out all the stops for the next iPhone else they could be losing one happy customer.

What Can I Say Iphone All The Way

There are a few problems with apple. Bluetooth is not fully enabled, i.e. you are not able to send pictures to your friends. The battery does wear out, they don't last forever. Multitasking just keeps putting semi closed apps on the base bar you can have 20 or more on there, you would only need to go to the last four or five in reality. To shut them down you have to hit the red minus say 20-30 times. I haven't found anything that tells you what is running in the background using data, or have I missed something. No flash 10.1, on the ipad it is not the best internet experience, 75% of video is flash and of the rest QuickTime can't play all of that. No widgets, most of the phone is just shortcuts to apps. Glass, no matter what Steve Jobs says it is not that robust. You are unable to use a file manager. Very few people have face time so just when will you use it. If you lose your USB cable you have to spend £15 on an apple one as they have blocked cheap £1.50 ones from working. Locked into itunes. iBooks is expensive so you won't use it. These are the main negatives just so you know.

I've Been an iPhone fan since they were first launched and purchased all the versions, including the iPhone 4, when they were released. The overall performance increase and screen technology of the iPhone 4 is very impressive but the actual phone performance is terrible. During numerous tests, with an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 3GS in EXACTLY the same place I received no signal with the iPhone 4 and full signal with 3GS. By profession I am a radio broadcast engineer, with nearly 33 years experience, and it seems obvious to me that, unless the aerial is coated in a non-conductive film or paint, touching it will compromise the efficiency. Although very clever I found the new design uncomfortable to hold and noticeably heavier, it also looks less individual. Due to the above I've gone back to my 3GS. I was also not at all impressed in how Apple handled the situation.

I have the HTC Touch HD, a reasonably competant phone but slow. It is up for renewal and am considering the iphone 4. The only thing stopping me is the GPS. I use memory map and am very impresed with it (yes, I can navigate with OS paper map, and no, I would never go into wild country without an OS paper map). Talking to others who own the iphone 3, 3G and 3GS, I understand that if you do not have a phone signal, the GPS does not work. This strikes me as stupid and for me renders the phone usless. Please can someone advise if this is true. If it is true, has this problem been addressed with the iphone 4?

And also when it was tested against the HTC Desire - I have never seen a more biased review in my life and you call yourself a consumer advice programme!! 5 G's?? Really?? I've noticed a lot of people who've left comments here praising the iphone usually mention somewhere in their comment "I'm a big fan of the iphone/ Apple". That pretty much says it all doesn't it. Don't get me wrong it is an impressive smartphone but the 2.2. Desire will outperform it in almost every way. I've long suspected the Gadget Show as being complete Apple slaves and your review (which was horribly one sided) confirmed this. My contract was recently due for renewal and for a looooong time beforehand I was totally convinced I would go for the iPhone, no question. However after using my friends iPhones (again all self confessed "fans") I must say I failed to see what all the fuss was about. No flash player, no Bluetooth, the restrictions Apple place on the user and the signal problem which is really not on for such a high end phone. It's like paying full price for a Ferrari only to find it comes with a Fiesta engine. Yet even with all these faults people flock like sheep to phone suppliers for this. And unfortunately the Gadget Show itself is guilty of perpetuating this notion. After doing my own research using unbiased websites I decided the Desire was the phone I truly wanted and I don't regret it for a second. I can admit that the Desire isn't perfect but it's a far more capable phone than the iPhone. The Gadget Show should be ashamed of themselves. You're a consumer advice show and as such should remain impartial but you're all obviously under spell of Apple. Trot along like the good sheep you are, I think I can hear your shepard Steve Jobs calling!

I have just tested the 'hold grip' on my Sony Ericcson W995 and the signal drops? So...it's not just the I-phone 4! I was renewing my contract with Orange a while ago. They would not say whether the 3GS was coming out on the network or not, despite France Orange having it! So I went Sony. Only to find out, a week later, that orange released 3GS! I had campaigned as an Acorn RiscOS StrongARM user for years for this to happen! I was disgusted with Orange's tactics of contract issuing and timing. So, do I buy an expensive contract on an out-dated under-performing 5 [a friend has signal problems when he places i-phone 4 phone in his pocket like most users do] or do I wait for for a 5? Will it be out of my price range or not available to Orange users who are renewing? Also, I have noticed texters with touchscreens use their nails to pick off letters? BUT what if you do not have large nails?

I stopped watching "The Apple Show" a few months back because of the undeniable bias in favour of Apple products. I decided to watch it last night (purely because there was nothing else on) and low-and-behold the bias is still there - I mean, how many times does Jason need to flash his iPad - not to mention the 8 or so Apple-related products in the competition. Seriously Gadget Show, I used to believe that you were fair in your reviews of technologies, but it seems now that anything with an Apple sticker on it and you love it, regardless of any flaws that exist or better products available. I can truly imagine a black-n-white CRT TV with an Apple logo on it becoming the next gadget of the year! I own an Xperia X10 phone, and while admittedly it does have it's faults, in my opinion Android beats Apple's iOS hands down in every category. The iPhone/iPod/iPad are all just fashion accessories (and WAY over-priced at that) and shame on you Gadget Show for being yet another sheep. Well, no more Gadget Show for me - and I was once-upon-a-time an avid viewer. I agree with some of the comments above: ARE YOU SPONSORED BY APPLE?? Truly a sad end to what used to be a good gadget review program....

I love the gadget show but i am surprised at the gulabilty of the review of the iphone 4. I would have expected an unbiased review, instead of 'apple is great' view so prevelent these days, how can a phone that struggles to fullfill its most basic function receive 5 stars. Also the iphone4 camera is basic compared with other phones, and as for phone functions, it laggs behind almost every phone released in the past 2 years. multitasking is an excuse. I have to hand it to you though the UI is first class and so is the screen and ipod functionality. But hang on, isnt this a mobile phone we are talking about?

Also, if you drop the I-phone problems, while ither phones may leave you in luck? You CAN buy a protective casing BUT this is expensive on top of expensive. One more observation, queueing [as we do in GB] in a paper shop, I wanted to text on my Sony Ericsson W995. Guess what, while holding paper in one hand, I could text one-handed! Yeta I-phone users have to tilt their phone for accurate texting with a larger key pad display with TWO hands!? So this is a no-brainer really, if you text a lot in awkward situations, do NOT I-phone it? However, I do love the speed, the screen, the apps and the browsing potential of te Apples. A friend has had problems with applying ringtones in MP4 conversions from Google directions to the Apple. I-tunes limits you and then you can be messed up with the micro-SIM chip. I think I still want one even after all of this!? BUT I have yet to see any company that does not 'tick boxes' to complete their targets without listening to their customers now-a-days. And when you complain?...Please HOLD and dial 0 if....

Excellent phone. I have had several smartphone but nothing compares to this. Not had a problem with the antenna and I have had this phone for over a month now. Picture quality from the phone is far superior to most phones to although the flash can be a little annoying when you do need to use it. The ease of use considering I have never used this phone is so easy that it feels like I have used one and did not take long at all to get used to it. Plenty of Apps to choose from and most importantly great for making phone calls. If you use the phone extensively it will only last a day but bear in mind this is a smartphone and they do require a lot of power to operate. However when I am working the phone does tend to last 2 days as I am not using it anywhere near as much.

@ marc armstrong No you're not missing something. To be frank the HTC Desire IS the better phone. I'm sorry to all you Apple sheep out there but whilst the iphone is a great device it's no longer the market leader - just accept it. In almost every side by side comparison I've seen or read or heard then Desire comes out top 9 times out of ten. Apple customers seem to be a very specific type of person - not very tech savvy, more concerned with fashion and impressing their mates than actually owning a good bit of kit. To paraphrase the great film Zoolander "Steve Jobs could wrap a dog poo in tinfoil and stick an Apple logo on it and the people will flock to buy it".....and no doubt the Gadget Show will give it a glowing review.

I've had this for about 3 weeks now and it's great, never ever had a loss of signal, in fact, if anything it recieves signal better than my old Nokia 5800. It's also got a much better touchscreen (capacitive rather than the Nokia's obsolete resistive screen), OS and camera, let alone web browser, apps and media player. Plus it's the best looking phone I've ever seen.It feels like it's expensive (which it should, because it was). Only criticisms are the difficulty of setting a song as your ringtone and the battery life is somewhat disappointing, I'd prefer if it lasted more than two days, but at least it's more a matter of slight inconvenience for me and not an actual problem.

The reception problems are a serious issue and the softwarepatch is too little too late but apple know only too well that there target market arent the type of buyers to worry about a small detail like the phone(yes it is actually a phone, not just a cool name) not working, there is no way this gadget should get five g,s unless of course apple gave all the team one to "appraise" at home shame on you.

Take tonights episode where they were finding the king of the smart phones. Before the program had even started I was thinking oh they will obviously put the Iphone 4 up there. And they put it up against the wrong HTC. Who wants a hopeless windows phone? If they had put it up against the HTC Desire HD then it would have wiped the floor with Iphone 4.

I worked in mobiles phones for many years from selling analogue through to digital, the first text messaging and then data. I don't think I have ever sold a phone that hasn't had an issue of some kind, from Nokias with their screen "cancer" where the screens would crack and bleed way to easily, Ericssons with dodgy batteries and dodgy software and various other battery/software/screen/button problems. The problem for Apple is that they have very high standards and have set customers expectations just as high. The fact is I always put my phones in a case of some kind and on the iPhone 4 that solves any issue so that's never been a problem. The point with the iPhone is it just works. The HD video recording is superb, the screen is beautiful and the build feels like real quality, unlike all that plastic you get out there. I had the iPhone 3G before and it was the first phone i didn't want to change after 6 months. So it's going to take a lot to get me to use any other brand in the future, but we'll see!

Why does this show literally go mad over apple products especially the iPhone. There are tons of bad points about it. Here are some.. Although the back may look nice its a fingerprint magnet Screen is small 3.5 inches compared to the 4.0 of the Galaxy S, the 4.3 on the desire HD and the Galaxy S 2 Operating system has hardly changed over the past 4 years. iOS looks outdated compared to other operating systems like WebOS, Android and WP7 Processor has been under clocked to 800mhz (not what you want for "the best smartphone money can buy" Only works with iTunes no real option as to what you can use7 Multi tasking is a joke! No way to close all running apps, have to close them one by one! Loading the market, youtube and webpages is slow compared to prity much every modern day smartphone (excluding the Nokia N8 and E7) No removable storage. No removable battery like other phones, if battery goes replace it with a £7 battery instead of attaching your phone to a £40 charging case. Cant just pop a normal sim in it. Micro Sim needed :S But the iPhone does have one good point The screen! Thats it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Iam 17 and work at the Carphone Warehouse. I owned an iPhone 4 Between Release date and September 5th, when i got a Galaxy S If i can find all these faults why cant the gadget show Also quite a few of the people commenting with things like "its the best smart phone out there" clearly dont have a clue what they are on about! Its one of the worst!

the i phone 5 was due for release in June 2011.However due to the release of the HTC incredible and sensible ranges the iphone was quickly redesigned and upgraded before it flopped....so where on this sight are the new Evo,Incredible or Sensational phones? seems to be another emotional review?

its the holy grail of smart phone. but not without niggles. IE battery life. having to do everything through itunes. othere than that you wont get a better phone. yes there clones IE samsung galaxy s, and so forth. but they are nearly there. at the moment the biggest threat is samsung galaxy S2. but when iphone 5 launches it will regain its crown. woop woop apple.

HAHAHAHAH, these comments are laughable! Why are people still looking at buying an iPhone 4? Here are some phones that i would buy over the iPhone and i recommend anyone looking at buying an iPhone to look at these phones first...1) Samsung Galaxy S2...2) HTC Desire HD...3) Samsung Galaxy S...4) Motorola Atrix...5) HTC Desire S...6) Samsung Nexus S...7) HTC Sensation (coming soon)...8) HP Pre 3 (coming soon)...9) HTC Desire Z...10) HTC Desire 11) Blackberry Torch...12) Dell Streak...13...Sony Ericsson Xperia Play...14) Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc...15) Motorola Milestone 2...16) Palm Pre 2...17) Nokia N8 (for camera alone)...18) Nokia E7...19) Sony Ericsson Xperia X10...20) Blackberry Bold 9900

hi mikey i think the reason why people are sticking to the iphone is because people have spent alot of money on their apps, so if they were to deviate from them then they & me would loose alot of money, at the moment i have got a 3GS fone & have got 118 apps, & that's a hell of alot of money to lose, so i suppose apple have got us over a barrel with these fones, so i will probably get the iphone5 when it comes out. lori

Hi Lori, I never thought of that, thats a very good point!!!! I had an iPod touch and spent alot on videos, tv shows and apps. I spent alot of money and obviously cant transfer my videos over to my Android phone due to them being protected by DRM which is a shame. I was going to get a new ipod touch so i could use the apps and watch the videos but i just couldnt be bothered :/ If you didnt previously own an iphone would you still get the iphone 5?

That episode that you did weeks ago (I recorded it and only just watched it today) where you pitched iPhone against nexus, HTC and blackberry was so fake. The nexus s magically ran out of battery at the very end. How can you possible say the iPhone is still the better of these smart phones..it seems to me that iPhone won because there's a bigger group of people that own the iPhone than the nexus s. I have used both phones...and I know which is clearly better..that episode made it loook fixed and lowered my opinion of the tests you do...I'm of the opinion that your iPhone fan boys. Makes me so angry..nexus s won in all tests and then died at end. Come on...please

Well, tried the iphone 4 for three weeks and really there is no comparison with others, however, the flaws in the system (signal issues, lack of flash, multi tasking issues, etc etc) led me to find the HTC range, and wow, I'm a convert! The iphone has been sold and I am now raving the HTC. I do think the iphone deserves maybe 3g's but certainly not 5 g's. Is the team sponsored by Apple at all?

Highstreetz does not seem to be legitimate company. I thought their price was to good to be true and they have no physical address, which is illegal. Has anyone from the gadget show team bought from their?

the majority of tech lovers drole on about how the iphone is the best smartphone,in my opinion its monontous fiction, the camera and video camera are egregiously lame compared to alot of others on the market, the compatability with anything manufactured other than apple is also shocking, how are they the best,i agree the OS ranks at the top of smart phones and if your after the best and most variety of apps the Iphone wins but for me thats it!!for example you can do so much more with an N8,mini HD,12 mp camera, download and covert most music or video files,i could go on,the ipad i think simbolises my points about the iphone ,''the ipads the best tablet but cant play flash videos'',wow glad to get that not so little rant off my chest!!!

Even after 12 months on the market the iPhone 4 is still one of the (if not the) best phone on the market! Looking forward to seeing what the iPhone 5 has to offer!

i have the iPhone 4 in White. i love it,but i hate it, the 4.3.3 software is so annoying, the battery drains really quickly. the iphone 4 is supposed to last at least a day, mine lasts 2 hours. -.- and i payed £510 sim free for it, and i cant get a refund because the t***s at apple put my money on a giftcard for some reason? apple are crap. i really want a samsung galaxy s.

Rich... Erm the screen doesnt break easily. The screen is made out of gorilla glass. The only way you can scratch the screen is with a diamond. Do you just make stuff up as you go along?

I have read all the good comments and all the bad ones too, I have had a Iphone 3g for 2 1/2 years, yes it can be bit slow yes the sound mute button does not work. It has a marks of wear and tear and one speaker don't work. It works for me for what I want and if and when I choose to upgrade, I will still get a Iphone that I understand and know how to work, no manuals its that simple to work, I also now people who have a Blackberry and they love them in the same way I love my Iphone. Pre my Iphone I used to swap and change every six to 12 months, there was always something not good about them and i tried everyone, besides the Blackberry and Iphone there is (from the expierience of my close friends) the rest of the competition including new phones to the market are way off the mark. Finally I had many issues with PC's but I bought a Apple Mac in 2001, after six months I used someones PC, frankly I thought I had gone back into the dark ages. Today i still use a Mac and it is still ten years ahead of PC and Iphones are still years ahead of any competition...

Samsung galaxy s2 is a far better phone in every aspect, and not just has better features its also cheaper. No brainer in my opinion, unless the apple brand logo does it for you.

In my perspect, Apple as lead the way with technology for phones and computers. The iPhone 1 was a start now i am onto my 3gs soon to get this. I have used this iPhone 4 many times and compared it with others like the samsung galasxy s and s2 and really it's all about preferance. Samsung have mage big screen phones, the iPhone is a smaller screen but i PREFER that. Many people don't. I must admit I am a huge Apple fan but I have tried to be as un-biased as possible. Like I said it's all about preferance. The camera is amazing, the concept and usage of Facetime is very clever and when I get my iPhone 4 I will be using that lots of times. I do love the interface, compared with Android's its much cleaner and more user friendly without all the widget rubbish. I dont care about the flash player, I would watch videos on youtube and thats about it. Heavy users might favour other phones but this is a revelutionary piece of tech, to prove this lots of adverts use iPhone's. Weather there paid to do it, I'm not sure. I would like The gadget show to update its site so its has the iPhone 4s. Thanks for viewing

Nice phone, but the screen shattered after dropping it just once. With all this technology, why couldn't Apple design the screen with a stronger screen? Apple retail store also said that it was irreparable, but I could have a replacement for £119. Though it may sound a good deal for a new replacement, this could have been prevented, had they built the screen tougher. Apple made claims that it was a "toughened" glass screen, but one drop is all it took from about 4ft. Their claims are a misrepresentation. The phone is otherwise still usable and the best phone I've had to date.
