Sony PSP-3000
The basics
The latest incarnation of the Sony PSP now has an improved screen with a higher resolution and built-in microphone for chatting via Go! Messenger and Skype. With the new screen glare is a thing of the past, while offering a brighter, more vivid display than its predecessor. Like the previous PSP it'll play video, music and games and let users play online with each other through a Wi-Fi connection.
The good
Nintendo may have mastered touch tech but Sony still delivers the eye-poppingest on-screen action. The latest PSP’s anti-glare display has more colours, half the response time and five times the contrast ratio of its predecessor, giving you punchy, blur-free game in even the brightest conditions. A built-in mic lets you Skype your pals over its Wi-Fi link, which also works for surfing the web and even streaming content from an internet-connected PS3. Redesigned buttons do nothing to spoil the PSP’s effortless gameplay – this console rocks.
The bad
The pumped-up screen occasionally shows annoying scan lines and doesn’t help the mediocre battery life (though switching off Wi-Fi will). Tweaking the TV Out to support older, non-Hi-Def tellies is hardly fair either – how can we justify that upgrade to a Full HD 100Hz panel now?
The bottom line
This is still the most powerful mobile gamer out there, with kick-ass titles like Patapon and FIFA 09 proving there’s life in the old handheld yet.

What is the difference between the PSP 3000 and the PSP Light and Slim or are they the same thing? And what are the PSP fat and thins...?

TBH JP, it's pretty much just the screen and mic. that's it. there's the PSP1000 (fat), PSP2000 (slim n lite) and the PSP3000 (slim, lite, nice screen and mic) and in Oct we'll see the PSP-GO! (even smaller, no UMD drive, on board memory). Functionality is down to what firmware update you have on there and that can be uploaded for free by Wi-Fi. i've got a 2000 (S&L) and i've been tempted to trade up, specially now the GO is around the corner, but to be honest you're as well off gettin a second hand 2000 if you're not going to play it too often. they're going on a huge software drive later this year about Oct when the GO is released and the software is compatable across the range of PSPs. there's loads of new titles coming out as well as classic PS1 titles available over PSN and other apps too, Sony are trying to emulate the Apps store that the Iphone has been so successful with. it doesn't have the functionality of the Iphone, but it's definately going to be #1 for handheld gaming.

i reckon you cant beat the PSP 1000 for its robust structure and its multimedia center and you can mod it to to make it 10 times better ..down side of the PSP 1000 was the analogue stick as after some time became unreliable in those key moments in games and on the net and the mouse or character would start to wonder with out you even touching it ...i don't like the other PSP's because the are not comfortable to hold and their battery life was shortened as the size of the battery was reduced too..simply don't like them... AND callum i think you should buy a GO! and not bother with the 3000 :) they are so much better as i had one myself :) there really goooooooooood :D=D

Help Any advice on buying our 8 yr old son a PSP or DS? He has a Wii but seems to be the last boy in the world to get his own hand held gaming thingy! I am completely ignorant of how, why or what these things do, so an idiots guide would be good. He plays the lego star wars/indiana games on the wii. Any idea of good games to start him off? Need good battery life if poss
