Microsoft Kinect
The basics
Previously known as Project Natal, Microsoft Kinect is a motion-sensing camera for Xbox 360 that detects body movement, before replicating it on screen. The result is a controller-free gaming experience using physical gestures and movements.
The good
This game-changing piece of kit of does away with the need for controllers, and feels gloriously futuristic as you move your entire body to control your Kinect games. The kit sits under your TV, and almost always works without a hitch. After installing a software update for your Xbox and a quick calibration, you’re ready to rock.
The Kinect will scan you and quickly recognise your every move with no apparent lag and the gameplay feels completely natural and intuitive, whether it’s a virtual steering wheel or a martial arts title.
There are 19 games good to go from Kinect launch, so there’s enough choice for everyone. They’re a bit more simplistic than usual Xbox titles, echoing Wii games and revolving around motions like running on the spot, or steering in Kinect Joy Ride. Kinectimals is unbelievably cute, Kinect Sports is hilariously good family fun and Dance Central is one of the games of the year for party fun.
The bad
For the seasoned Xboxer, used to Halo and Mass Effect 2, Kinect titles may feel a little flimsy, but then it’s targeting a different market.
It’s also not a super-slick design – the unit is a foot wide and several inches deep. But it's just about as subtle as it could be for the size.
You’ll also have to have a decent amount of room to flail around in front of your TV.
The bottom line
For the price, Microsoft Kinect will transform your Xbox from a serious gaming hub into a console capable of delivering spades of family fun. And there’s still so much potential in the sensing tech that we’re sure to see even more greatness in the future.

This Actually Looks Quite Good But The Playstation's Move Also does Lets See How They Compete In The Gadget Market
Report as inappropriateGinge199509 August 2010
Kinect is better if they can think of a way of playing 3rd person shooters on kinect that would be amazing.

Playstation's move is basically just a copycat of the Nintendo Wii
Report as inappropriatehgydruh11 August 2010
The kinect is exactly the same as the eye toy
Report as inappropriateged15 August 2010
right first of all Playstation move is not a copy of Nintendos wii motion controllers because firstly sony had already patented along time ago for a motion based controller. and kinect wont work that well i have seen latency issues with it. and it wont work with shoot em up games because i would like to see how you would reload a gun and fire its not possible and they dont have the tech for it this is where buttons are needed! :)

kinect isnt supposed to be about shooters, even though they are the most popular genere on the market (microsoft being stupid)move is gonna be the same as the wii, with two remotes. I cant think of any diffrences.

plus kinect isnt the same as the eye toy. it has motion usability as well as voice control and face recognition. you can walk in front of the screen and wave to sign into a account it recognises your face. remember it scans 40 points on your skeleton so if they wanted to they could make that fighting game on xbox and use real punches , kicks and blocks.

Believe me, when you try the Kinect out for real you will be AMAZED!!!! It blows the Wii out of the water, and the Sony Move and is nothing at all like the Eye Toy. This is an awesome must have piece of kit!

I just played with one of these for 20mins at work. Played on a 50" TV on the demo version of the Kinect Adventures game that comes with it. First impressions was that it was fun and the game was very much like the Wii- same styling and fun orientation, but obviously looked much better at the 1080p and power of the Xbox. The actual controlling was very fun and is a very interesting concept. You feel silly at the start- and at the end of the racing game I was playing it had images of us playing from during the game which was funny-, but then we all did when the Wii first came out. I played on my own and two player games, both worked smoothly without any problems playing two players. I found the precision of the actions and pressing buttons on screen a bit clunky and felt like it needed refining. But then also it was my first time doing the actions and it was only a development version of the game. Within a year it will be much bigger and better than the Wii- depending on how many people want to spend £300 buying Kinect and an Xbox combo- and has the potential to be amazing- with the face recognition, etc. But until Easter I wouldnt expect many games that arent of the Wii styling to be released/to work smoothly. So if you are aiming to buy one within the first few months of launch be prepared that the games will feel like a Wii, but with much more freedom and fun.

Still very confused about wether to get it or not. Was planning to get it for christmas but worried that if i don't pre-order it I won't be getting one and do pets e.g. dogs affect the game play?

Kinect is not a copy of the EyeToy and Playstation Move is not a copy of the Wii. I t was thought of at a similair time as the Wii but they did not make it because they were designing PS3. Anyway Kinect is alot better than EyeToy it has depth sensors and is quite accurate the EyeToy wasn't very good (I liked the EyeToy it was fun and amazing then but Kinect is better). Playstation Move is slightly more accurate than the Wii Motion Plus and it has a camera so it relises if it is behind anything and makes it more accurate.

to start off the ifference from the wii and the playstation move is that the wii sends infra red all over your room and the control cuts these infra red and thats how it reads where the control is. in comparison the move controllers and actually picked up by the motion sensor and camera. kinect is a great idea but how much control can you really have on motion sensors? i believe the kinect will be gtood for some things but it will be a long time before you get first person shooters with the kinect because to encoporate the graphics game play and motion sensing would be far to much for the consol to handle.

I have had my Kinect on pre-order for sometime now and I was really looking forward to it. After scouring the internet and reading reviews I am really unsure if I want it now. It does sound very intresting but I don't want to be spending £120 on something that is just like a Wii replica! So it picks up 40 different parts of your body, but I am a hardcore gamer, I was hoping for 1st person shooters, fighting games and quality sports titles. From reading reviews it doesn't seem like they'll be out anytime soon...... And up to 4 ppl can play it, well they can on the dance game!

Don’t forget the speech recognition!! That’s absolutely amazing. So not only could you use motion caption but you could use voice commands in FPS as well.

Kinect arrived on Launch day and with some minimal adjustment to my front room I was up and running(Kinect Sports, excuse the very poor pun). All I can say is wow, this is a fantastic peice of tech. For those of you who compare to the Eye Toy, you could not be more wrong. This is a huge leap forward from a technology perspective to any user interface on the market today. The real success of this will be based upon the dev take up, but I can assure you the possibilities for this type of tech are endless. For those of you who doubt the product - play it then give your verdict.

I got kinect about a week ago. My room ain't that big tobe honest yet it still manages to deliver a great gaming experience! I don't know if the person who reviewed Kinect for IGN was looking at the right console when he said that it was "difficult to set up." What a lie! It took me around five minuites on first time instalation. I believe that Kinect truly deserves its 5G rating.
Report as inappropriateAnonymous07 December 2010
The gadget show test wasn't fair. The Kinect shouldn't have got 5 G's. Only 4 because you need so much space for it, at least 10ft. Alot of homes don't have that. You won't be able to have it in your bedroom. I would like to try Kinect, but I don't have the space and it's expensive. I think alot of people who get it will be disapointed by how much space you need. The only game that looks good is Kinect Sports. Play Station Move has alot better games and a wider range. I have Move and it is brilliant. If you are going to get it or have it, you should get Heavy Rain. Personally I would prefer to have a controller. There's just something wrong with gaming with no controller.

I was inspired to write this comment after reading the one above, I own the playstation move and also heavy rain which is an awesome game by the way and the xbox kinect. While the move does add a layer of interactivity to the game it really isn't necessary and already the move barley makes it out of the cupboard. The kinect on the other-hand has got the whole family jumping around the living room like mad men. Until you try the kinect its hard not to see it as a fad but now having spent hours on the thing I can confidently say its got real potential and is a lot of fun and adds a new dimension to owning an xbox 360, in fact we have just brought a new xbox just for the kinect as I could no longer get on it to play black ops. After giving both the move and the kinect a fare crack its the kinect thats definitely come out on-top for family fun. If its just adding a bit more depth for hardcore games you want the move is definitely better. Oh if you want to play multiplayer on the kinect you really do need about 8ft of space and about 5-6ft on your own. Hope that helps, ultimately its just about what you want to use them for.

Why is everyone so angry on here. It reminds me of the old 8 bit computer days at school. Sadly I'm unable to play the kinect because my front room is quite narrow and I don't have an XBox (PS3 and wii black for me). I am really interested in this but more in it's non gaming aspects. Could you imagine how cool an interface you would have with kinect (or something very similar) and a 3D glassless TV. Actually, can you imagine the games. The future of interfacing has just begun.

Got the Kinect for Xmas and had the nephews around, they and I loved it. The way you configure it once and then do not have to worry is great, they could just jump straight in. It cme with Adsventures and despite having to remind them to move back, they had a whale of a time. Can't wait for the fitness game to arrive to get rid of excess turkey, sorry but it is goodbye Wii, graphics and controller of the Xbox far outweigh the now aging Wii.

so our wii is getting on a bit and now makes lots of strange noises , in the market for new machine , large lounge so no space restrictions monet always an object , but where best to spend my money between the 3 consoles ??????????
Report as inappropriateGemma Barbet01 January 2011
Just enjoy it! So what if its a fad? Just give it a go or you will never know. To anybody that is not sure if they have the space to play the Kinect, 6ft isn't that much. The ACTIVE games for the Wii require just about as much space so as not to get too over excited and hit the screen (in which case you will wish you got the connect as it tells you to stay back!). We have had the Wii (stagnant) for about a year and a half and just got the Kinect for christmas. Between the two i think the Kinect will have a much longer life in the gaming world. For me the Wii has become very child like. I know some will disagree but i expect X-box will be a lot more imaginative and daring with their games. I for one can't wait to see what else they will throw at us!

Taken ours back for a full refund, it's rubbish. Very frustrating. The Promise of what it delivers is way greater that what it ACTUALLY delivers. I wish reviews would reflect that. But i'm guessing everyone wants a big of Microsoft's 1bn Kinect advertising budget...

Went to play it at a friends but it is not so good if you are sat down, i use a wheelchair but was sat on the edge of the sofa as i can use my legs but just not stand and balance. Its a thing which maybe microsoft could work on? Hey guys ... and gals at the gadget show, what do you think? Im sure Joe/Jane public would like to hear your views on this matter, for better or worse, it would show how pro active you could be for EVERYONE. Cheers, James

i have one, i have tryed the PS move and the kinect is way better because there is no controller because the PS move has to scan you before every game because xboxs are way cheaper so really just go for the kinect

Firstly Its AMAZING and is way better than the PS Move. The PS Move is laggy and boring as you have to hold controllers. Also the rubish that is going around about it picking up on furniture is a load of LIES!!! Its only said because a lot of people who support Sony and there playstation cant take that Microsoft are better!!!

A young boy and his dad went out fishing one nice morning. After a few quiet hours out in the boat, the boy became curious about the world around him. He looked up at his father and asked "How do fish breath under water?" The father thought about it for a moment, then replied "I really don't know, son." The boy sat quietly from another moment, then asked his dad again, "How does our boat float on the water?" Once again his dad replied, "Don’t know, son." Pondering his thoughts again, a little while later, the boy asks "Why is the sky blue?" Again, his father answered, "Don’t know, son." The curious boy, worried he was annoying his father, asks this time "Dad, do you mind that I'm asking you all of these questions?" "Of course not son", replied his dad, "How else are you ever going to learn anything?" Don't you feel that many articles and whole web sites are much alike this story?
