Apple iMac 20 inch

The basics

The Apple iMac 20in features a 20-inch screen with 1,680 x 1,050 resolution, an Intel 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of memory, a 250GB hard disk drive, plus a dual-layer DVD burner. It comes with a built-in iSight camera, Bluetooth and Draft-N Wi-F in addition to the standard wired keyboard and mouse.

The good

The Apple iMac doesn't just look stunning. Its 1680x150-pixel display (also available in 24 inches) displays stunning, super-sharp images. Overall it's not that different from the previous model, but then if it ain't broke... It does have the new 802.11n Wi-Fi adaptor, though for better wireless range. Naturally, being an iMac, it's a breeze to use, with Leopard working like the big cat it is. And that Intel dual core processor? Well, it makes sure you won't miss your PC...

The bad

... unless you want to play games that is. The iMac isn't exactly a games machine. While the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics chip is decent, it's definitely not going to please hardcore gamers, occasionally struggling with 3D graphics. Also it would have been nice to get a Blu-ray drive. Other than that, there aren't too many minus points here.

The bottom line

Undoubtedly Apple's greatest ever desktop. The iMac is a showpiece computer that garners admiring glances towards your desk whether it's turned on or off. You might even call it the iMac daddy. Ha ha, HA! Sorry.

Ref: the above review Now the graphics chips and speed of RAM (coming with 4GB and up-scalable to 8GB) have all been upgraded, the imac in all it's screen sizes is a decent all round machine that'll keep you going for many years to come. Plus at the date of writing, 'snow leopard' is coming out in September and will be an upgrade cost of only £7.95 (included free in all macs bought after release) and Apple claim it will greatly increase the speed and stability of the imac.

Had this exact one, upgraded the ram to 4gb. I am selling it now though because i'm buying a PC. When i bought it i wasnt that big into gaming but recently my interests have rekindled into it. I would have kept it for music expolits but meh at finances and i've also found an alternative to garageband on pc called mixcraft so thats all good. Macs have pretty good resale value for a computer too.. I Though in references to the negatives. I really couldnt see a hardcore gamer buying an imac as a primary computer. There video cards are usually pretty weak.. Even the new ones now have like 256mb cards in there base mode when even a mid range multimedia desktop pc thats quite a bit cheaper will have 512mb-1gb cards.

I have just purchased my FIRST ever mac desktop in the form of the 27" 3.66 ghz and im not too sure how i ever survived without it. The time machine application is an absolute life saver, so without a doubt as cutting edge as Sky+ and even the mobile phone absolute genius.

Definitely the best desktop to date. It's a joy seeing rooms filled with these at my college, though most people I know still dislike them. A quote from my Media teacher today 'it's a shame that Mac don't have a right click still' ...just to get that out there.

@whitemoth, what on earth are you on about? Mac mice have had right click for years, just because you cannot see the right button doesnt mean it isnt there. The magic and mighty mice use their touch sensitive to ascertain which button press is intended. doris

I bought a 21.5" i Mac and it is wonderful. After years of using windows based machines, this is a revelation, after 7 months it is still surprising me that it is so reliable and the 25 second boot and on the net time is so amazing it still is a joy to use. I was reluctant to spend twice the price of an equivalent windows machine but trust me it is worth every penny. I've als just bought a 13" Macbook pro and it is just as good

I have tried windows and there is no comparison. Easy to use, great styling, so simple to use. Why do window machines still have that large box of tricks that look so ugly. If you have the money, enjoy the mac. Who wants to play games anyway.

I've had my iMac for about 4 months now and not once has it crashed! I brought a high-end laptop PC around the same time running Windows 7 and it crashes at least once a fortnight (even though it's a very high end laptop!). Apple OSX all the way!

I am looking after my brothers while he is away and have only used it a few times but he has had it for 3 years at least and has used it for his university work in music and it is fabulous!! Ok so its quite expensive but I would say well worth it.

If anyone really wants BluRay on the Mac take a look at http://www.macblurayplayer.com/ I haven't used it so can't comment but I am told combined with an external BluRay player it works well. Not an ideal solution but it is an option to consider.
