Samsung BD-P4600

G-Rating

Rating of 4

The basics

A Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player with multi-format Blu-ray and DVD playback, upscaling, all audio formats up to Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio. One HDMI and optical audio output. Oh and it's wall-mountable.

The good

Samsung has beat Bang and Olufsen to the punch, with this world’s slimmest, wall-mountable Blu-ray player. Admittedly, B&O probably wouldn’t have it given it that weird ‘Touch of Colour’, but this is still one of the most striking lifestyle BD players out there. It even comes with a little stand to flaunt its sexy slimness, the little minx. The P4600 is quick off the mark, too, firing up in well under a minute to deliver sharp and solid HD playback with rip-roaring audio. A USB port lets you watch digital pics, music and video files.

The bad

Such an anorexic case leaves little room for ports, so you’ll have to do without component output or multiple audio sockets. The P4600 doesn’t have a YouTube or Netflix mode like other mid-range Blu-ray appearing on the market but we don’t think it’s such a big deal – the quality is so far from Blu-ray’s sumptuous visuals, it’s like building a telegraph reader into an iPhone.

The bottom line

Eye-catching or eye-sore? This lifestyle player may not be your cup of tea but there’s no denying its scorching start-up time and tasty video quality.
