Humax PVR9300T

G-Rating

Rating of 4

The basics

This Freeview PVR from Humax has two digital tuners and can store up to 200 hours of recordings on its integrated 320GB hard drive. There's also one-touch record scheduling in the EPG, a pause-and-play live TV function and Picture in Picture.

The good

Upscaling blocky Freeview channels may be akin to slapping lipstick on pig, but this porker looks almost good enough to kiss. The Humax does a great job of cleaning up the more pixellated programmes, and has a huge hard drive with room for 200 hours of telly. A Picture in Picture function lets you watch two channels simultaneously (great when the ads come on) and there’s HDMI output for your Hi-Def flatscreen.

The bad

Is that a police helicopter hovering outside your window? Or perhaps a tsunami thundering down your street? Nope, it’s just the Humax’s cooling fan – although it does get quieter when you update the firmware over-the-air. Another annoyance is an electronic programme guide that feels slower than pulling on your shoes, wandering down to the corner shop and buying a Radio Times. But at least without the temptation to buy a Twix, too.

The bottom line

Immensely powerful and flexible digital video recorder than polishes up Freeview nicely. Just watch out for that noisy fan and sluggish EPG.

I have read many reviews on this product and the biggest critisism was the noisy fan. This almost swayed my decision not to buy one but after hearing that a software update almost resolves this issue, i bit the bullet and bought one today. Well, what can i say, its the quiet as a mouse! Not a whisper and i did not even need to do an update. I suppose Humax have wisely dealt with the problem which means there is very little anyone can say to put this product down. I am very pleased with it so far and quite surpised how much i do like it. A verygood buy indeed. Get one. Craig

I bought one of these about 6 months ago, having switched from Sky. Today I'm throwing out the Humax and going back to Sky. The Humax is the most unreliable piece of electronic kit since the Sinclair Spectrum. Programmes in the recording schedule often do not record. Sometimes they record for a few minutes then stop so when you watch all you get is the titles. Even more infuriating, the last few minutes of a programme are very often missing so you don't get to find out who dunnit. I contacted Humax and they told me to retune the box, which I did, but it made no difference. Mike

Bought a Humax PVR-9300T last December. Fairly happy with performance but would like to create some sort of folder structure for the 200 hours of programmes possible. I can do this by putting a simple code at the beginning of the recorded programme name but have not discovered a text insert facility so I have to re-enter the entire programme name every time. Any constructive ideas out there?

We bought a Humax PVR9300T DTR at the end of November, together with a new Sharp HD TV from Currys Chichester. Every day, at one time or another, it froze. We had it replaced and had a new digital TV aerial installed. It continued to freeze every so often. We had it replaced, and an aerial filter/booster fitted. It froze - and the third one's fan was noisy. In every case the Humax froze, usually in the middle of the night, but also when we were absent from the house and trying to record something - so recording did not happen. It even froze in the middle of recording. We have replaced it with a less pleasing DVD recorder, which is less easy to use, but at least does not FREEZE!

I've had this model for just over a year and up til now its been great. OK occasionally I had the freezing same as James but I loved being able to record and watch different things at the same time. But now its decided to give up the ghost turns itself on and then off and goes round in a loop. It said on the screen that my aerial was short circuiting so I got a new aerial fitted (£140) waste of money coz its not a problem with the aerial at all. Its the box. Such a shame. I'm in two minds now as to whether to risk getting a new one or just a DVD recorder. I dont want to go to Sky. I object to paying for rubbish I'll never watch but then it might end up being cheaper if the Humax only lasts until the warrantee runs out.

Mine is so quiet I sometimes get worried whether it is actually recording.. but it did... 2 channels at once. It looks like 'lossless' recording too, because I cannot tell if it is live or recorded: same quality to me, and as good as or better than the Phillips Freeview STB I had before! The Time Slip is easy to use, the PiP is fantastic, the Guide a joy to use, the sound quality through SPDIF via Pioneer AV amp to Mission speakers is joyous! BTW the 'aerial short circuit thing' (RTFM): unplug from the mains before connecting or disconnecting the aerial, which I would advise for any receiver! Maybe the negative reviews are for the few early production models that slipped through QA? My Humax PVR-9300T is SWEET and you would have to tear my arm off to get the remote out of my hand :)

It's pot luck whether this records or not. Example - series of 5 episodes. The first 3 recorded, the 4th was missed, then it taped the fifth! Really annoying if there's something you were excited about watching... I've lasted a year with it to pay for itself...i've now gone for a Panasonic.

I was recommended to buy the Humax PVR-9300T, so did so in October 2008. Since then it has been replaced twice, and I am awaiting yet another replacement. This machine is not fit for purpose: constant freezing, failure to record, inability to record manually; dumping of pre-records via EPG. Humax have been slow to respond, albeit that they take responsibility for their product, Was told by Humax that although I bought the original product in October 2008, and have had two replacements since, all not fit for purpose, my guarantee will run out in October 2010. I am on to Trading Standards, and if I had a penny a minute for the many hours I have spent in trying to get Humax to honour their commitment to their customers, I would be able to afford SKY!

Well I purchased one of these over a year ago, the machine is great but the firmware now needs updated. To do this you need to receive the download via the terrestrial arial it sounds easy enough but the loading program I have is "out of date" so I thought I would do it via my pc but you need a RS 232 C cable the "C" meaning crossover which is like looking for hens teeth. Humax help line want to charge me to send it back although the machine is only 15 months old, I have been round & round in circles with Humax and I would never purchase another Humax item as a result of this. Great as long as it WORKS.

I have one of these units and its the most unreliable freeview box i have ever owned. The unit freezes on a regular basis, the remote is hit and miss with regard to communicating with the box, and the decision to record one off, series or none at all is at best random. I would not recommend this unit to anyone.

a lot of good things being said about this hd recorder, however, i have found a fault with it. under the slide on the controls you have a source button which youi press to get your veiwing from sky etc, but once that is done you can not get the controls to do anything else until you press button again. you can not record from another source other than the normal freeveiw channels. as yet humax have failed to come back to me on this.

I love it! Had an older version for years until it finally gave up the ghost last Christmas. This 9300T is brilliant, esp being able to record two channels and watch another, also to be able to preview channel in the programme guide. I refuse to pay for Sky when I'd make so little use of it (and have a thing about Murdoch's global domination) so Freeview & Humax is perfect for me. The fan is occasionally noisy but hopefully that will be fixed after the update. HIghly recommended.

Bought one of these to replace my mother's Sky+ in an attempt to sav her some money. It turns out to be a bad choice as the box is exceptionally unreliable and she is regularly on the phone asking me how to fix it. I'm now going to return it as it is just too flaky. For this kind of consumer product you need to have 100% reliability and Humax have shot themselves in the foot by releasing this with poor quality fimware.

Have been using for about 8 months now. Has missed one or two recordings but that could be my fault otherwise has performed as it should. Aerial shortimg? Just do as it says in the handbook, no problem. One problem of freezing but the Thomson before it started doing it regularly. Crossed fingers good value for money. I can just hear the fan if I listen hard and close.

Am rather consoled by the adverse comments re the PVR 9300T Am about to ditch the second Humax A waste of money at just over two years old. Locking up ie freezing and refusal to record either manually or timer now a permanant condition. Have had a cheap Tesco Technika for 5 years and no problems £ 90 as opposed to £165 says it all, will never buy another Humax product

In general worked ok. User interface could be easier and more intuative and faster. Frustratingly, skip buttons are hidden under a flimsy and fiddly sliding cover, which i can see breaking and being discarded very soon. In the recordings library which needs two button presses to access, once you've selected the programme to be played back, and pressed play, you need another button press to exit the library. The EPG is very cumbersome to use. The nudge moving forwards or backwards in time increments instead of the faster programme increments. The forward/backward one day being on a second page, needing another few button presses to access and exit.

In a word, unreliable. Now I generally use iPlayer rather than use this box - you cannot tell whether it will record something or not. The one thing this equipment must do is reliably record programs. It doesn't. Humax must sort this out or they deserve to go bust.

I have a PVR9300t unit. Over the past nine months the unit has faultered at least six times. Watching through the TV side the tv channels return "NO SIGNAL" turn on PVR and picture on tv returns. plug aerial direct to TV and picture is fine. Reset the PVR and tv picture side returns. It seems there may be a fault when watching TV with PVR on standby. Oh yes this is my second unit as there were similar problems on the first one.I have the update in July 2011 installed and still the problem occurs. Also you lose all program record settings when resetting and lastly the recordings stop before the end of the prgramme you are recording, annoying. I could not recommend purchasing this unit, but if these problems did not happen, it would be a really good box.

I have just purchased one of these and I have the same problem as steve, in that when the unit is on standby the tv shows no signal. I think it will be going back.

Ive had my HUMAX PVR-9300T for a year now and its been faultless I nearly didnt but it because of the reviews saying the fan was too loud etc but this was fixed a long time ago by a software upgrade My only gripe is the volume control doesn't work when using it on the HDMI cable the level bar moves up and down but the volume remains the same the mute works though. It works ok using a scart lead but I thought the picture was better on the HDMI so I have to use the tv remote for the volume My tv is only a 720 dpi but this displays fantasticaly as it doesnt have to upscale and the picture is as good as a blue ray when on a HD chanel Also I cant tranfer the recorded files to a pc or external hard drive for storage, will look for this feature on my next PVR I think most people's recording problems lie with their ariel signal either too week or interferance. I had to re-route my ariel away from any mains cables on my previous box as is was crashing when the central heating came on, "Click Woof Crash!"

Have had this unit for at least 18 months. Brilliant picture and superb sound via the optical audio out to my yamaha reciever. The 'no picture on standby' that some people have commented on is possibly because the unit is set to energy saving mode. You can switch this off and pay a few more pounds on your electricty bill and the tv will recieve the signal whilst the humax is on standby. I find the set and its remote very easy to use. The EPG and various record features have been totally reliable, though signal strength certainly affects how quickly the EPG loads up. Have had a much earlier Humax freeview box long time ago, and varios other makes too, but this is by far the best I've had. I'm now looking at adding a FOX T2 to my set-up so that I can receive HD channels too.
