Panasonic Viera TX-P42S10

G-Rating

Rating of 5

The basics

The Panasonic Viera TX-P42S10 is a 42-inch Full HD (1080p) plasma television with 30,000:1 native contrast ratio. It has 400Hz sub-field drive, JPEG playback, Freeview tuner and three HDMI ports. It measures just 105mm thick, and weighs 27kg.

The good

Evolution has turned dinosaurs into chickens and orang-utans into Megan Fox, so why shouldn’t it transform Panasonic’s ancient hot and heavy plasmas into this modernistic thing of splendour? The P42S10 is now (almost) as slim as an LCD, with low power consumption and the latest 24p playback and frame smoothing motion algorithms. The feature list is fully evolved, too, thanks to x.v.Colour, 100Hz scanning and a wide choice of picture modes. Standard def Freeview pictures look fine but feed it a HD source and the Viera blossoms into life with picture quality that will have you glued to the screen like optical Araldite.

The bad

To achieve this level of picture perfection, at this price-point, Panasonic has stripped out anything unnecessary. You won’t find the slinkiest menus or the most rip-roaring sound on board this Viera, and three HDMI inputs is really the bare minimum these days. There are no VieraCast web widgets, either.

The bottom line

In the cut-throat eco-system of flatscreen tellies, it’s strictly survival of the hottest. Panasonic’s plasmas prove their worth by shrinking waistlines and price-tags while offering images that are bright, smooth and arse-slappingly exciting.

Took your advice, glad I did as this tv is extremely good. You're spot on, with an HD feed it is incredible. Very happy, thanks guys!

been looking at the tellie for a bit now, I was going to go with an LG 42LH3000 for just under £500 (Dixons) but have decided to pay the extra £100 for "better blacks" (at least so i've read over and over again on a number of review sites and customer reviews). Hughes Direct is doing it on amazon.co.uk at the moment for a penny under 600 squid (and officially on their own website for £200 MORE!!). Glad to see it got top marks from the Gadget Show too, now my mind really is made up!
