LG 42LH5000
The basics
The LG 42LH5000 is a 42-inch Full HD LCD television with 80,000:1 contrast ratio, 500cdm brightness, 200Hz motion control and four HDMI inputs.
The good
As we all know, 42 is the answer to the life, the universe and everything. It’s also a decent response for how big a telly you can get away with before being banished to watch TV in the attic. This well designed, mid-sized LCD from LG comes with this season’s must-have feature – a 200Hz motion control system that makes it possible to watch super-smooth footie without getting a High Def headache. High speed scenes are suitably crisp and bright, although you can always tinker with the scanning system (and a myriad other settings) by delving into the 42LH5000’s deep, deep menus.
The bad
There’s no numerical solution for the LG’s wishy-washy blacks and weak colours, nor for its rather limited viewing angle. Sound trickles rather than floods from the LG’s ‘invisible’ speakers (note: ‘invisible’ here means ‘hidden from view’, rather like the ‘invisible’ circuit boards, processors and memory chips. Spooky).
The bottom line
With its uber-bright panel, headline-grabbing price and aggressive motion control, the 42LH5000 has the armchair sports fan firmly in its sights. Fans of more subtle subject matter (and/or crown green bowls) might prefer a TV that bites off less than it can chew.

Had this TV for a month now. Got it for £699, bank holiday deal at Curry's. I have to agree with regard to the blacks, but not that much of a problem. Totally disagree with the wishy wash colours comment though. If time is taken to calibrate this set, you will observe vibrant natural looking colours. The menu system is very clear and you can also play DIVX , MKV ,MP3 and JPG files via memory stick from the USB socket. Motion is also very good, even at 50Hz.

I have had this set for a couple of months now and agree re the blacks - they often look a bit "grey" rather than pure black. The set produces stunning fast moving images (F1 motor racing for example) but slow moving images are often hampered by ghosting, particularly around people who are walking slowly. There is also noticeable judder on panning shots (across the trees in a forest for example). Anybody who just watches tv and dvds, like me and my wife, would probably be better off paying a bit more for something like a SONY which, judging by the reviews I have read, do not seem to suffer from the same image handling problems.

Hi! I just bought a 42LH5000, and the quality of the image is not so good. Pixels are noticeble when watchind movies on dvds and something i can't stand is GHOSTING. From time to time when the camera is moving or the actor talks a bit slower a BLURING effect appears for a couple of seconds. The image on cable tv is ok regarding the fact that the cable tv signal is not digital(HD) yet. So if you want to play movies on dvd you can expect to see bluring effects and the image is not so smooth when landscape views are displayed. And the 200Mhz TRU MOTION IS CRAP!!! It runs everything faster so the picture is faster than the sound and makes the movement of the actors unnaturally fast.(not only on dvd but when watching cable as well)

Very impressed, got one in xmas sales for £599 from Currys. Turn true motion to low when watching sports though. Apart from that nothing bad to report.

Just bought this t.v from currys in Christmas sale. £599 inc some goodies thrown in. Once i got it set up (really easy) i found the set to have excellent colours, and good motion, only really fast movement catches it out briefly, but it soon recovers. The issue with blacks that others have mentioned seem to have been cured by the set up tweaks i made during set up process. Overall an excellent purchase, especially at the price. Would recommend this t.v to anyone at this money !!

I think the comments about the weak colours is a little harsh. Setting the calibrations yourself is obviously the answer as with any TV. For the price it is one of the best LCD TV's on the market surely. What Hi-Fi gave it a 5 star rating (http://www.avforums.com/forums/lg-owners-forum/1009881-lg-42lh5000-lcd-tv-gets-5-stars-what-hi-fi.html)

Got mine just before the price dropped before XMAS. Colours I think very good, but agree with the ghosting on slow moving panning shots etc. Pity it didnt come with a HD tuner though. I dont know if other TVs do but it seems to be an obvious feature that has been left out, and a shame that the 1080P display isnt fully taken advantage of. Perhaps a software upgrade later or is that another thing that doesnt really work ??

I bought a LG 42LH5000 in Dec 2009 for £599. It has a horizontal shadow (darker area) through the middle third of the screen. It is worse when the screen colour is light or opaque. ie when playing the Wii when menu screen comes up. It is not the input signal as I get it with the built-in freeview, when playing a DVD or playing the Wii. It seems to get worse the longer the TV is on for. I have reported it to Currys, and they are sending out the Techguys to pick it up and take it for repair, so I will be without a TV for 2 weeks. And I don't hole out much hope that they will fix it. Has any one else seen this problem with LG tv's?

I also bought a LG42LH500 in Dec 2009 and noticed the dark horizontal line after a few weeks. I contacted LG and their repair man basically changed all the components and screen leaving only the original frame and speakers. It made no difference. The Sky man has just been and proved it is nothing to do with the inputs. I shall be contacting LG again and ask for a new TV or different model.

Have had this TV for 8 months - the 200MHz motion control is rubbish. It cannot cope with certain types of motion such as people moving across the screen and a really artifical looking set of pixels / blurring appears as a halo around the person as they move. We keep it switched off so feel that we have wasted the extra money that this set cost over the lower spec model that didnlt have the motion control. We have also (for the first time yesterday) experienced the "LG blackout" that I have read about on the web where the pictureflickers and disappears but the sound stays on. There seems no cure and only repeated witching off and on seems to have got it to come back again - I feel a phone call coming on.
