Sony BDV-E370 3D home cinema
The basics
The Sony BDV-E370 is an affordable all-in-one Blu-ray home cinema system with a 5.1 surround sound speaker array, 3D Blu-ray compatibility, Ethernet networking for Bravia Internet Video and DLNA media streaming and “Made for iPod” USB ports.
The good
The system does a stellar job with Blu-ray movies in both two and three dimensions, delivering incredibly detailed pictures bursting with punchy colours, sharp edges and deep, dark black levels. Standard def DVD upscaling is handled with aplomb too. The speakers may be small but they’re not shy: they belt out audio with surprising force, blowing most rival compact all-in-ones out of the water when it comes to sheer sonic power and dynamics.
The bad
Putting on our nitpicking cap, we could point to the lack of HDMI inputs and a dedicated iPod dock as flaws – but given the price tag (and the fact you can hook up your iPod via USB), we’ll forgive Sony these minor missteps.
The bottom line
A low price, great performance and a cracking selection of tech features. An outstanding entry-level all-in-one, all things considered.

Watched my first Blu-Ray film last night (Alien) see report below: Picture - at first you only notice a slight improvement. Better contrast and a little crisper - definitely not the "wow" I was expecting. Then, after about 10 minutes, you really appreciate the technology - you notice beads of sweat and skin pores on the actors that you have never seen before, you can actually read what is written on switches on the control panels, murky backgrounds become crisp and clear. Not sure if the 47" telly helps but in the final scene where Sigourney Weaver is in her skimpy undies getting into a spacesuit, I actually saw two moles on her upper thigh! Overall I was impressed. Even although this film was over 25 years old, they have done a good job of transferring it to HD digital. No doubt not every Blu-ray disk will be as good as I am sure that picture quality will depend on the transfer and original material. Sound - good, but only a little better than my previous SD setup although the dialogue was exceptionally clear (I actually understood a line that I had only heard as background before). I had understood that Blu-ray audio tracks were also enhanced as more digital information could be included. I must look at the display and compare a SD to a Blu-ray disk as the player will display bit rate. Overall (on that disc anyway) very good but not exceptional. Bonus: - stuck a DVD in that had some WMV files on it that I had downloaded from the Internet - the player read them all and after a bit of setup adjustment I actually had wide screen porn! Lifes little surprises...
