Archos 5 Internet Tablet
The basics
The Archos 5 Internet Tablet isn't just a tweaked version of the Frenchie's five inch touchscreen tablet: it's running a whole new operating system, Android, you might have seen on phones like the HTC Hero. That means it's incredibly easy to browse the web over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and you can tune into FM radio or listen to music stashed either on board or on a microSD card.
The good
There's not been a great Android multimedia player until now, but the Archos 5 Internet Tablet sets the standard for everything from Android phones to Apple's iPods to follow. There's vast file support for both music (MP3, WMA, AAC, Ogg Vorbis and FLAC) and video (MP4, WMV and MKV), which looks stunning on the stretchy, 4.8-inch screen with a sharp WVGA resolution, and you can even play HD video on a TV if you grab the dock accessory. Despite its size, you won't find it difficult stashing the Archos 5 Internet Tablet in your pocket, as it's just over a centimetre thin, with a well placed headphone slot for when you're on the move, and it's supremely comfortable to hold. Net surfing is zippy over Wi-Fi, although Archos's own graphical skin it's slapped down on top of Android makes things overly complicated by moving Back buttons around for funsies. Why do it?
The bad
The new Archos 5 Internet Tablet may run Android, but that doesn't mean you can download just any old app for Google's platform. You're stuck with those available on Archos's own AppsLib e-store, and compared to the Android Market, its shelves are more empty than a Soviet supermarket. On the hardware side, consider lugging a hankie around with you, as it's a fingerprint magnet, and if you're planning on picking up the hard drive version for the huge 500GB of storage space, know that it's twice as thick as the Archos 5 Internet Tablet 32GB model we tested.
The bottom line
Archos is clearly gunning for the iPod touch with the Archos 5 Internet Tablet, but when it's so much larger, it's missing the point. The Archos 5 Internet Tablet is perfect if you find yourself squinting at video on the Apple PMP's small screen, but if you want a media player that doubles up for gaming and so much more besides, stick with the iPod prince.

Just wanted to point out that the list of suppliers and prices shown at the bottom of this article are for the original Archos 5 Internet Media Tablet - not the new Archos 5 Internet Tablet with the Android operating system, which is what the article is describing. That's a shame as I'm keen to find a high street retailer to buy the new one from (I have the original one already and it's great!)

Since Archos ripped me off with the last player I purchased from them by allowing wi-fi then wanting an enourmous sum to obtain the browser. Sorry Archos, once bitten twice shy; this new unit gives you the browser but charges you for every other app

I own an ARCHOS 5. Just the bees and ees for the perfect travel companion. Wi Fi is brilliant on East Coast Main Line and Virgin Trains. You can pack lots of data on board. Apps are not everything and ARCHOS works for me. Upgraded from the 605 Wi-Fi. ARCHOS 5 so much more stable.

Had my A5IT since early February and absolutely love it. I previously had the 605 which in itself was a great little device but this one takes a HUGE step forward. Apart from the fantastic video and music playback the Android addition gives it so much more. It has become my book reader now and with this little gem in my pocket I am never at a loss of something to do when I have some spare time out and about. WiFi is excellent and when no WiFI is available I just tether it to my mobile and access the internet through that... fantastic. You also are not restricted to the Archos application library as the Google Android market is available with a little bit of work as well opening up a whole new world of possibilities for this beautiful little device. I have had all previous versions of Archos and have never had a problem with them. This is a must have device as far as I am concerned!

Archos 5 IMT 500Gb owner - Android donut 1.6 (allows more freedom) - still tied to the appslib - but if you have external access to the market place you can get material that way. Plays any format fillm out of box except HD - you need to buy the cinemaHD plugin or the gen6 DVR which come with the plug in. Plays any format of music - speaker quality is good but quite (remember PERSONAL media player) - recommend a good set of headphones. Screen resolution and contrast - SUPURB - glare an issue but managable. Appslib is not Archos fault but strict requirements of Google - but the level of applications and quality is good and growing. If you like music and video - BUY IT - the andoid add on is just a bonus. Expansions will cost you but the build quality shows they are worth it.

I bought the Archos 5 IT last sunday and have spent almost full week trying to get the thing to work properly. One of the main reasons for the purchase was the 160gb memory, I'm off on holiday in november for 3 weeks and wanted something to hold my music collection, and also allow me to access the internet. To load music onto the archos I use WMP, as recommended, which can take a while. However I have now found that almost daily, when turning on my archos, my playlists have either completely vanished, or are empty, which means I have to resync with WMP, which again can take several attemps, and hours, so I have spent more time with the archos attached to my pc than actually using it. Initially wifi connected to my home connection no problem, but after a couple of days I could not get it to connect to anything, continually getting an "unconnected" message. I dropped a note to Archos, got a reply within 24 hours advising me to "reboot", I had already tried this. I left my archos switched on over night last night, and this morning was connected to wifi !!! However my playlists have gone again. The idea of the Archos is great, the Android apps are great when the thing works, but not reliable and I will be returning mine at the weekend.

I really want this product. I need something that can easily play multimedia and just drag and drop files into the device via computer. The iPod Touch doesn't do drag and drop files. My mum paid £30 for something she didn't need for iTunes. That is why I want the Archos 5.
