Yamaha TSX-130

G-Rating

Rating of 4

The basics

The Yamaha TSX-130 is an all-in-one audio system with CD player, FM and DAB radios and iPod/MP3 player dock. Stereo 2x15W, 8cm speakers and bass reflex port. It's also a clock radio. It weighs 4kg.

The good

When this bedroom system is rocking, don’t come knocking. The CD player draws on Yamaha’s disc-spinning expertise to pump out solid, assured tones, while the media dock does a great job of giving digital tunes depth and spaciousness. Thanks to a rear-firing bass port, the Yamaha has plenty of low-end grunt but it’s calm enough to also tackle talk radio, via 30 FM and DAB presets. The slim, logical remote is handy if you can’t be bothered to get out of bed, although there’s also a combo of effective alarm modes, including one that wakes you to a specific tune and then follows it up with a piercing beep.

The bad

At four kilos heavy and 35cm wide, the TSX-130 threatens to collapse any but the most substantial bedside table. Yamaha tries to make a feature of its bulk by touting a ‘convenient real wood flat top’ for storage – but you’d have to be an extremely controlled sleeper to risk placing a glass of water on top of this £300 clock radio.

The bottom line

Overweight, over-powered and over-priced for most bedrooms, the TSX-130 might have the brawn (and the beauty) to muscle its way into your living room instead.

Maybe it WAS designed for the living room, certainly at 30W and at that size! If you want a bedroom radio need something less powerful and smaller. I don't think that it's overpriced. It's competitors are Roberts, Creative Soundworks etc and they are similarly priced. Bose's prices are in another league and in no way comparable.

I actually had this as my clock radio for the last 8 months - it was fantastic - but it had to go back as the ipod connection wore out... not good considering how much it cost me! Sound was incredible though!

Am looking for a radio that has a record memory installed. Is there such a radio as my radio takes tapes and cds, and this isn't really suitable.
