Pure One
The basics
Budget DAB/FM kitchen radio with scrolling text, battery or mains power and a choice of plastic colours.
The good
On digital radio, all the chattering human DJs have been replaced by technotronic beat-mashing robots who explode if they talk for more than ten seconds between songs. If only. Sadly, the One delivers Moyles and co’s pitiful jokes and painful wakey-wakey pop in crystal clear sound, with nary a trace of hiss or fizz. If it all gets too much, you can switch back into crackly old FM for some delicious radiophonic nostalgia.
The bad
The bargain basement One has few of the usual DAB bells and whistles. For instance, you can’t pause or rewind live radio... although wait a minute, that’s actually a bonus with Chris Moyles, isn’t it? Battery life from the six (!) C cells is an extended 35 hours, but if you’d rather not trash the planet while you enjoy Woman’s Hour, an optional rechargeable battery pack costs a painful £35.
The bottom line
Basic kitchen wireless that will entertain you while doing the washing up. I don’t mean that the Pure One will do the washing up, of course. It’s far too busy putting on the kettle for a nice cuppa. Two sugars, please!
