Navman S90i

The basics

Navman S90i - Navigation Redifined. With its clean lines and sleek finish, the S90i makes its mark as one of the best-designed and most innovative portable navigation devices in the world. Intelligent features such as built-in Real-time Traffic and Route Traffic Overview let you know in advance whats ahead and safety features such as Text-to-Speech speaks road names as you approach a turn.

The good

Bedecked in tasty black and grey, the slim, pocket-friendly S90i finally makes satnavs sexy and includes a 2-megapixel camera. Shoot a favourite restaurant (or rest stop) and it's stored along with coordinates. Fancy revisiting? Just recall the picture and tap it. Download pictures from the excellent Navpix website, which contains restaurants and places of interest. Clocking in at a couple of seconds, satellite lock-on is exceptionally quick. Navman's clearly focused on the simple user interface - instead of buttons it uses touch-sensitive menus, terrific Western Europe maps and directions. Bluetooth, a free lifetime of traffic updates and safety camera trial round off a competitive feature set.

The bad

There's no FM transmitter, which you can just about cope with, but unbelievably the S90i is missing a pedestrian mode as well, so you can forget using it as a city guide. The addition of a camera is useful, but does seem a touch gimmicky, and arguably not of wide interest.

The bottom line

Whether you're bothered about Navpix or not, with sublime looks to match solid performance, this is one of the most user-friendly satnavs we've seen. And dead reasonable price-wise.
