TDK 3 Speaker Boombox

The basics

Looking like an old-school boom-box this box of tricks is dripping with modern features. The design influences are worn so clearly all over the TDK 3 Speaker Boombox it’s virtually impossible not to end up with a huge smile on your face. You either ‘get’ the look or you’ll hate it.

The good

The styling is retro but the materials are modern with touch-sensitive buttons supplementing the two LED infused dials. There is even a small LED control panel and 5-preset AM/FM radio for when your own music isn’t enough.

Music wise, the TDK 3 Speaker Boombox has a 6-inch subwoofer and two 6-inch coaxial drivers there is enough power to deliver 35 Watts of sound. Inputs can be found on the side and include 3.5mm audio jack, USB, RCA inputs and 6.35mm audio jack for adding a mixing desk or instruments.

We love the layout of the dials, even though they may no intuitive sense, as you’ll end up using the touch-sensitive buttons to fine-tune all the settings. The sound quality is amazing, thanks to the built-in graphics equaliser, and there is enough power to crank this up to entertain any house party with little or no signs of distortion.

You can pack 12 ‘D’ batteries into the base of the TDK 3 Speaker Boombox and take it on the move with you but weighing over 14kg, this is a monster of a Boombox.

The bad

We’re not too impressed with the lack of covers for the speakers, either, so you really won’t want to take it outside. That said, it has the most ludicrous carrying handle of any speaker system ever but the TDK 3 Speaker Boombox is intended to be carried around. Only, get yourself a back brace or move it around on your skateboard, as this beast is amazingly heavy.

The bottom line

If they remade ‘The Fresh Prince of Bell-Air’ Will Smith would say ‘smell you later’ to the cab driver with the TDK 3 Speaker Boombox on his shoulder (or more than likely held by two of his minders). With plenty of boom to shake, shake the room, this is the new Boombox on the block.
