Sennheiser MXW1
The basics
The chord-less MXW1 earphones transmit uncompressed audio over a robust 2.4GHz digital link to a transmitter that fits on your MP3 player with multi-receiver capabilities. It also has a dynamic transducer system and neodymium magnets to aid the audio, and a twist-to-fit system for a more comfortable wear.
The good
For real audiophiles, Bluetooth just doesn’t cut it. So Sennheiser went ahead and designed its own Kleer wireless audio link to beam notes through the air with Germanic precision. There’s simply no arguing with the pristine quality and extended range of uncompressed Kleer audio – it’s like upgrading your ears from Betamax to Blu-ray. The rechargeable W1s come with a neat portable docking station, too, that can charge the earphones remotely, and you even get a high-quality elastic band to hold the teeny transmitter next to your MP3 player.
The bad
The small earphones are extremely well made and come with adapters, but they aren’t as snug as the Shure SE530PTH or Etymotic ety8 efforts. Unlike Bluetooth headphones, you don’t get full remote control of your music – just a basic on/off button. Like tap shoes, these are not recommended for jogging.
The bottom line
Cutting-edge wireless sound quality, and cheaper than hiring a band of musical leprechauns to follow you around, playing your favourite tunes on tiny fiddles… but only just.
