Nikon Coolpix S210

G-Rating

Rating of 3

The basics

The Nikon Coolpix S210 is a compact and easy-to-use camera that comes in a classy aluminum and chrome casing. With its impressive 8 megapixel resolution,6.35 centimetre diagonal LCD screen with 3x optical zoom, and ISO settings as high as ISO 2000, this camera is convenient to carry around without having to make any sacrifice in picture quality.

The good

Picking up a Nikon for under £100 is like finding a Van Gogh at car boot sale, and the slimline S210 certainly splashes around colour like an Impressionist master. Photos are sharp and bright enough, and the flash is perky for such a cheap camera. It’s good to find a metal body at this price, too.

The bad

You’d have to be a sensitive artistic soul for the S210’s dodgy autofocus and grainy low-light pictures to drive you to DIY ear surgery, but they’re certainly worse than most Nikon cameras. The 3x zoom lens feels and looks cheap, suffering from various fringing and distortion grumbles, and the electronic vibration reduction is next to useless.

The bottom line

The Nikon takes care of photo basics at a recession-busting price, so you can save your precious pounds for beers and holidays.

The Nikon Coolpix S210 looks a cool and rugged camera and at an affordable price for most people, seems like a bargain at first. It has some great features which i would love to incorporate into my picture taking but is let down by some of the features not working properly, such as the `grainy autofocus` and bad low light ability. Most mobile phone cameras can handle these much better and have a miriad of features which actually work. I was very tempted by the low cost of the S210 but Nikon need to work a bit harder if they want me to put another gadget in my pocket to go along with my allready adequate mobile phone. I shall either spend the money on beers on holiday or invest a little more and buy a good quality camera that i will be happy with, probably the latter! Happy snapping, steve.
