Casio Exilim EX-FH20

The basics

A compact, bridge-style camera that’s loaded with professional features for controlling focus, exposure and shutter speeds. The maximum resolution delivers 9.1MP stills and there’s an impressive 20x optical zoom for getting close to the action. Best of all is the ability to shoot stills at up to 40fps and video at 1000fps – that’s serious slow-mo action.

The good

The 40fps photo mode is a great addition and lets you snap away, safe in the knowledge you can pick out the best image from the bunch later. Shooting is an absolute breeze thanks to easy-to-use controls and a well-thought-out menu. The compact body makes it less obtrusive than larger, professional cameras. The image quality’s not bad, either.

The bad

The EX-FH20 needs plenty of light to take the best images, so don’t expect too much of it in lower-light conditions. Though the camera can record HD video, it’s at 1280x720 not the Full HD of 1920x1080. Unfortunately, when you’re recording movie clips, the otherwise excellent 20x optical zoom doesn’t work, and you get a 4x digital zoom instead.

The bottom line

Nicely balanced and a joy to hold and shoot with, the EX-FH20 is a solid bridge-style camera. It has a range of practical, creative features and provides rich, detailed shots – and its sub-£260 price ensures that this fills the role of a great all-rounder.

I have the camera - you can use the zoom if you cancel the sound & believe me passersby often need silencing! so I'm very thankful that sound can be cut. If I want sound then I zoom in first. I've caught some great moments & thoroughly enjoyed using its many features. My only gripe - & its a big one - is that my camera defaults back to 'digital zoom on' every time I switch it off, this is the only feature setting that does this - why?! There are times when you need to act quickly - to delve in the menu to switch this off yet again has meant too many missed shots - leave it on & the resulting shot's quality is rubbish.
