Canon EOS 500D

G-Rating

Rating of 4

The basics

The Canon EOS 500D DSLR camera has nine-point autofocus, so no more fiddling with the focus ring, or dodging false autofocus locks. The 500D snaps into sharp focus no matter where you frame your subject, and the camera will even record video too, capturing gorgeous pictures in Full HD, and letting you play cinematographer with interchangeable lenses.

The good

Behind the bells and whistles the Canon 500D remains a consumer-level SLR. It’s compatible with Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series Speedlite flash guns. Not that you’ll need the latter for most shots: the 500D packs an eye-popping maximum ISO of 12800. Results in low light are spectacular (although increased graininess is to be expected), and means the 500D is more flexible in dim situations. A super-sharp screen on the rear, meanwhile, shows pictures in VGA quality, and serves up live-view pictures when shooting video. Neat extras, such as automatic dust-cleaning, remind you that the 500D takes photography ultra-seriously. Sure, it’s fun to use, but when it needs to nail that killer shot, the Canon 500D is a no-nonsense machine.

The bad

If you’re looking for a cheap and cheerful snapper, you should look elsewhere. Starting at £650 with an 18-55mm lens, the Canon 500D is far from cheap, and to get the most out of it you’ll want to use different lenses, filters, flash guns and a tripod. That’ll all add up.

The bottom line

It's not cheap, but if you’re looking for an entry point to serious photography, the Canon Eos 500D is well worth the outlay.

Had mine for about 6 weeks now, possibly the best camera I have ever owned or used. The Canon build quality is superb Yes it's a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for

This is a great camera, I use a Nikon D70 for work but the Canon is much lighter and has a better low light capability. I have used the video function at sports events such as a Judo competition and the results were fantastic alsthough you need a fast card with a large memory I only had a 4GB but it was a sdhc3 if you shoot in HD then you will soon fill up a 16 or 32GB card. I have also used this for a wedding and cant fault it. I have the 17/85mm lens with the stabilizer on I also have a 70/300 macro.

Bought this camera as a starter and introduction to photography in September. Loving using it, so easy to pick up and get used to even for a beginner! If anyone needs any examples of pictures, there's some here http://www.flickr.com/photos/e_symphony/sets/72157625369642669/ taken with the standart 18-55mm lens and also a Tamron AF 70-300mm Macro lens.

Got this camera (canon eos 500d kit with 18-55mm lens) for a really low price brand new, it was £416.99 including P&P, haven't used it yet as they forgot to send the lens but have despached it now (probably why it was soo cheap) but looks great and can't wait to start getting some great shots and great video aswell :)
