Sony DCR-DVD410E
The basics
Standard definition camcorder that records to either DVD blanks or 8GB of Flash memory. The 25x Zeiss zoom is optically stabilised and has IR night recording, and the 2.7-inch widescreen LCD is touch sensitive. It measures 130x89x55mm and weighs 400g.
The good
Here’s one hybrid you don’t have to join a waiting list to buy. The DVD410E’s hybrid recording system is perfect for big occasions: stream standard definition visuals to the 8GB of internal memory (enough for over 100 minutes at top quality) then burn DVD copies on the spot, complete with Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Top quality Carl Zeiss optics keep the 25x zoom sharper than most budget camcorders and the Super SteadyShot stabilisation and touchscreen LCD are second to none.
The bad
While a replacement lithium ion battery for the Sony won’t set you back £3,000 like a Prius powerplant, you’re still looking at around £100 for the juice to burn several discs on the move. DVD camcorders have never given the sharpest images or punchiest colours and the DVD410 is no exception – make sure you’re happy with its average video before committing yourself.
The bottom line
Simply the easiest way to make DVD movies for friends and family – while keeping an easy digital copy for yourself. It’s a long way from High Def, mind.
