Flip Ultra HD

The basics

The Flip Ultra HD is an easy to hold, easy to use camcorder that shoots 720p video onto the onboard flash memory at a smooth 30 frames per second. You can copy it quickly across to any computer, but there's also the option to cut out the middleman and playback your video straight on an HDTV with HDMI.

The good

Improving on the recent Flip minoHD, the Flip UltraHD offers 8GB of storage built in, providing 2 hours worth of hi-res footage, and a larger 2-inch screen so you can see what you're filming for once. Recording is as as fool proof as ever: just push the big red button and you're away. The footage itself is crisp enough, and even stands up well in low light for the price you pay (do expect noise though), and you can play it all back straight away via the Mini HDMI port.

The bad

At £160, the Flip has lost its purpose of being somewhat. It's fine, but Toshiba sells a full HD camcorder for a whole £40 less now. With auto focus. What gives? We're also getting a bit tired of the pop out USB port. Convenient, yes, but when the camera itself is wider than the port, it becomes next to impossible to stick one in a laptop without having to balance the machine in a ridiculous position, and since it's to the top of the Flip UltraHD, it threatens fall off a desktop tower from its weight alone.

The bottom line

Provided you've got steady hands, the Flip UltraHD is a great solution for capturing quick video, but as Flip cameras have become more high-end, other companies have met it in the middle then strolled right past it, with better specced, similarly sized shooters for cheaper. Unless you're a die hard Flip fan, it's hard to recommend this over the Toshiba Camileo S10.

I dropped the right hints and was given one for Christmas. I'm not in a position to compare with competitors but all I can say is that it oozes solidness and quality, performs faultlessly and now I wouldn't part with it for the world. The 'steady hands' criticism is valid, but I am experimenting with a large wrist strap, just big enough to slip over my head, that enables me to brace the camera against the strap - it seems much better. I understand it was bought well under rrp too. Recommend

Was sceptical reading reviews on this recorder on Amazon and similar sites, screen going blank and unreliable was the message. Risked it and not looked bank. Faultless! Good quality for teh price, not fantastic but ood enough on PC screen. Purchased to capture moments of new babys first moment and memories, perfect for what i want. Would recommend highly.

I bought my Flip Ultra HD ready for a forthcoming staycation in Cornwall. Fed up with gadgets with endless settings and options, I wanted something to point and shoot with. Mission accomplished. The Flip feels well made, its a doddle to use and does exactly what I wanted. Simple but effective - just what I like.

I bought the flip ultra (not HD) and it is very annoying how it runs on batteries which I have to keep changing. Despite this I made an OK movie with it but I wouldn't recomend using the software with it. Also the resolution isn't that good on the normal one so I'm guessing that the HD one is only average. I find it a bit of a rip off considering the quality and that it runs on batteries but on the good side it works on macs (I use imovie with it) and the videos can be put on to ipods. Overall I would give this gadget 7 out of 10 because of it's portability and it is easy to use

Now available for around £100 off play it is a bargain. Robust reliable and convenient. Yes there are weak areas such as image stabalisation and little zoom but the picture quality is excellent on PC and on my Kuro 50". Works well indoors and outdoors unlike the Toshiba mentioned above. It is tempting with these smaller products to over complicate them to compete with more professional gear as they evolve. I admire that the flip has stuck to it's basic format. Love it. Now filming more stuff than ever as I don't have to worry about lugging around cables/cd's etc when going to friends. You can plug it into ANY computer, any time and download. This model has a rechargeable pack so the reviewer above is talking about the old std model not the HD. Please can you move that review to the correct product.......? It has excellent light detection when moving from dark to light, quickly adjusting to provide great colours. It is a bit grainy in very low light but fine under normal indoor lighting and daylight. If you want perfect well planned movies buy a small HD Camcorder, if you want something ready for those 'you've been framed' moments and candid snap shots of life then this is the best solution. The new minoHD is £50-£70 more and is smaller but offers no extra features. The Tosh is supposed 1080p but this is not strcitly true and some features are disabled at 1080p as well as it being a very low bitrate. 720p is perfectly adequate for most uses and means you can film twice as much. This is now the value for money option and the Gadget show price is long out of date.

Beware! "What it says on the box" will record record for 120 mins, but not continuously. Had this out for half an hour with Cisco, all they'd say is "It will record for just over an hour". Which they fail to mention on the box, user manual or in Flips retail training to Dixons staff. If you're after it for archiving stage performances, sport, etc. make sure you've got a half time oranges pre-sliced, cos you'll be away @ the Flip!

With a voucher code on the site the HD flip can be bought for around £79, was £69 earlier in the week.

My advice is don't buy it for the following reason: 1/ takes over 7 hours to charge by USB ( if it ever charges ). 2/ the sound quality is very poor 3/ does not work well in low light ( very grainy ) 4/ Flip software is very basic and has caused problems with imovies. ( very hard to remove software ) 5/ you really do need a steady hand and I work as photographer and do wedding videos. finally, I am on my second one now, first one would not recharge and the second is just as bad, thats get getting sent back, I'll try the Sony.

I bought a Flip Ultra camera for my wife over 12 months ago and have used it a few times (6-12). I was initially impressed with the simplicity of the camera. However, it soon developed minor glitches (e.g. freezing, wasn't easy to turn on, would stop recording etc.) and then eventually would not switch on at all. I left it a while and then tried lots of things to fix it. Eventually I contacted Flip's customer service. To be frank I found them to be completely useless and disinterested. Their advice amounted to saying that it was out of warranty so they couldn't help and that I should buy a new one. Problems with these cameras cannot be fixed (unless you include taking out the batteries and putting them back in again), they can only replace the item (which they won’t do unless it’s under warranty). My advice … do NOT buy a Flip camera. If you do then make sure that you deal with any minor glitches immediately whilst it is still under warranty and can be replaced – do not wait.
