Creative Vado HD
The basics
High definition (720p) Flash memory camcorder with 8GB of memory, fixed focus, fixed focal length lens and PC/Mac software for editing and uploading clips. Comes with HDMI output and cable. Measures 100x55x16mm and weighs 100g with rechargeable battery.
The good
The not-so-daft Vado is going head-to-head with Flip’s Mino HD. It isn’t quite a clone war: the Vado HD boasts twice the storage (8GB), a larger (2-inch) screen, removable battery and custom HDMI connector for instant plasma screen playback. Even the PC experience is easier, thanks to the Vado letting you watch or copy its pin-sharp clips via USB, rather than booting up the built-in software. The rubbery case comes with a silicone skin for protection and the battery should last long enough to let you fill up the memory – about 2 hours.
The bad
It’s HD, Jim, but not as we know it. George Lucas wouldn’t be over-joyed with the Vado’s wobbly colours, juddery motion and faint audio. And when ‘budget’ cameras get this pricey, you might start wondering where the video light, autofocus and zoom lens are.
The bottom line
Although we’re not sold on the need for High Def video from these cut-down camcorders, especially when it looks this average, the HDMI output and generous memory are nice touches – and it is super easy to use.
