Canon HF100
The basics
The Canon HF100 is an HD video camcorder that features a large 1/3.3 CMOS sensor, 3.3 megapixels, four recording modes and image stabilisation that utilises Canon's Super Range Optical system. One downside is that it does not come with a built-in flash memory, but this also makes it way cheaper than its brother the Canon HF10.
The good
Fancy capturing glorious movies without compromising on size? Measuring under 13cm, and shooting high-quality full 1920x1080 movies directly to SDHC memory cards, the Canon HF100 is one of the best mid-size camcorders on the market. Footage is exceptional - colourful and rich with detail - and to help reduce shake, the 12x optical zoom incorporates Canon's outstanding Super Range optical image stabiliser. With a sharp 2.7-inch screen, smooth zoom lever, small joystick and well-positioned buttons, it's exceptionally easy to use too, with full auto, shutter and aperture priority among the 13 shooting modes.
The bad
Little to grumble about here, although the manual focus is tricky to use. Also, it would’ve been nice to see the inclusion of a slow-motion shooting mode.
The bottom line
Brimming with features and capturing amazing footage, the HF100 is probably the best mid-range camcorder money can buy. It's not bad looking either.

Hi Great show - normally record it to get through the ads quicker. Was watch one last night on budget HD camcorders (very funny) but notice once again that the web site is out of sync with your latest recommend. Why is this?? Matt

The comments on the previous screen state that this camera uses 25 fps in order to give the footage the look of film. All PAL cameras shoot at 25 fps as standard, film is shot at 23.976 fps. Get you facts right please. This site and the TV show are both full of bad comments and advice. Listen to people who really know what they are talking about.

This is a camera that is now discontinued, but Jessops have some on offer for £399.99, discounted from their previous price of £450. Sounds like a good buy at this price but I'm still not sure I want to spend that much on something that wont be used very often. Panasonic SD10 is more tempting at £289 from Amazon, but not reviewed here.
