Archos 605 WiFi 30GB

The basics

Archos 605 WiFi 30GB is a portable video player perfect for watching movies anywhere. This PVP has an 800 x 480 resolution in a 116.84 mm top-notch touch screen. This device is WiFi ready that allows you to wirelessly download and store your favourite movies. Aside from its high resolution and this PVP is also MAC-compatible.

The good

Zut alors! With up to ten times the memory of an iPod Touch and a larger, sharper touchscreen, this French beauty is prettier than Jean-Paul Satre and brainier than Charlotte Gainsbourg. And possibly even the other way around. Video playback looks jaw-droppingly amazing, even now that the 605 has been around for 18 months. The Opera browser (£20 extra) can handle YouTube and Flash sites (sorry, iPod), and the 605 can swiftly be turned into a mini DVR with the £60 recording station. Battery life wobbles between 5 hours (video) and 17 (audio) and it will work with just about every file format out there.

The bad

Merde! Build quality veers between Peugeot and Renault compared to the Cadillac class of Apple’s iPod Touch – the screen isn’t multi-touch, the software’s buggy, the headphones are pants and even the USB cable isn’t standard. There’s no email client and nowhere to store the touch stylus. It’s also annoying that you have to pay through the nose for every tiny plastic insert and digital plug-in.

The bottom line

Like that gorgeous but slightly deranged French girl you met on holiday in Thailand, the 605 is tempting, infuriating and sporadically expensive. You might not be together for life but you’ll never forget how good she looks.

Very dissapointed not as relyable as my old 400, returned for repair after 3 days use would not charge, repair took 6 weeks and lasted for 6 months before fault returned, out of work now so cant afford to send it for repair so can only use on dock. Also anoying that you have to buy plugins for internet and other everyday functions which are quite expensive. Video playback is fair 8/10 Audio through speaker 5/10 Audio through phones 7/10 Ease of use 5/10 Internet 5/10

As a long suffering Archos user (the term customer confuses Archos), the 605 which I purchased with 160Gb, plug-ins and DVR station all at extra cost in December 2007 as been a complete disaster for the last four years. The unit has so many faults, just a few: 1. Design flaws – the unit exhibited cracking from its rear fixings 2. After 9 months the unit exhibited a loss of battery power and picture quality it turned out to be a faulty PCB – yes you guessed it more money! 3. Then the battery failed, after 18 months only 60 minutes, which makes watching films impractical and extremely frustrating – yet again increasing the Archos coffers! 4. Once you negotiate the confuted repair procedure, and spend yet more money Archos change your product key and delete you paid for plug-ins!?!?!?!? You have been warned
