Had the Hero for two weeks now and so glad I went for it over the iPhone. I could just not justify the extra cost for the iPhone over the Hero and actually when you get your hands on it you realise it is actually just as good. Yes the movie playback isn't as good as the iPhone but apart from that it works like a dream. It also syncs with Hotmail and Googlemail automatically without the need for third party apps.
In summary, amazing phone and a third of the price of the iPhone and available on much cheaper contracts.
In response to Phil Cordells problem setting up Google if you haven't already fixed it, I had exactly the same problem. Unfortunately it only seems to let you Sync your phone with Google if you set your account information up as soon as you boot your phone for the first time. If you try and do it retrospectively it seems to kick up a fuss. Luckily I figured this out before doing too much with the phone and therefore did a factory reset and went through the initial boot up set-up process.
