I've had smartphones from other manufacturers before, but nothing can touch the iPhone - nor get within a mile of it - I'm a total convert. The whole set-up is so intuitive, it almost feels organic. I got the 3G on contract 2 weeks before Apple announced the lauch of 3GS and whilst disappointed that mine doesn't have some of the S's functionality, I can look on the bright side and say that I enjoyed the extra weeks of usage.
Love 'em or loathe them, the strap line on the Apple ads (we've got an app for that) is bang on. Why rely on manufacturer's own built in software, when you can get an app for 59p that has been designed (and regularly upgraded) specifically for purpose. Networks have forced the minimum lifetime on phones up to 18 months, meaning that regular phones become obsolete - not so with the iphone as (within hardware limitations) if a new idea comes out you know there'll be an App for that! If you don't like the way an App works, either buy another one, or speak to the developers as most of them are open to suggestions for improvements. The point is that you aren't stuck with whatever software comes pre-installed.
