im sorry but in no way is the wii better than the Atari. John what were you thinking?
Report as inappropriateG_Force03 August 2009
Jason has been seriously wronged here. Without the Atari there would be no Wii or any of the other consoles. The Wii will be Wii II and Wii III on no time flat and then dead and buried, far from the logevity of the of the Atari. Taking the time into consideration many of the "grannies" playing the Wii were the original gaming generation on the Atari platform.

Rubbish! Without doubt you made a big by choosing the Wii. Yes it has sold a lot but people have more available cash for luxury goods nowadays. Back when the Atari came out it was exclusive-I remember how popular friends became if they had one. The Wii has re-introduced the family fun element back into gaming but the only reason for this is the evolutionary race that the Atari started. Please reverse your decision. Thank you Iain

The Atari should have won, it was a pioneer for gaming consoles, the wii isn't a true console, it is a watered down toy for kids and has almost no good games.

The Atari should have won. The Nintendo Wii was a complete disappointment when I tried a friends console. Hugely overhyped! Atari is the vintage classic it is because it established itself as a pioneering, class act console which has remained so through the years. Big fat wrong decision putting the Wii on the wall of fame. :(

While the Wii is great fun, it shouldn't have won. The Atari 2600 practically started affordable home console gaming. All the Nintendo have done with the Wii is update the gamecube with easy to use controls and simple games that casual gamers can play. In my view, thats not really innovation, its just a method. I think Nintendo should've stuck with the current technology (720-1080p graphics, a hard drive, a good online play experience) and released sequels to all their excellent franchises: F-zero, more Zelda, Kid Icarus, Starfox etc, all the gamesthat made the SNES, N64 and Gamecube awesome.

Atari 2600 should be on the wall instead of the wii. This is because Atari’s legacy is larger, you said yourself it has the longest life span of any console, compatible with other console controllers than came after it such as the sage mega drive and was able to beat the consoles that were meant to replace it (Atari 5200) that why it should be on there. Also the wii's motion control idea isn't original think back to the PS2 and the eye toy and motion control goes back even further than that in gaming history.

I cannot believe that this is not just a way to get people to come and take part on your website. The decision is so off the mark it is scary, I have the wii and while it can be great fun, however it does not compare to the Atari, this was the birth of gaming, a technical wonder and a true icon. Please reverse your decision.

oh dear oh dear oh dear, i'm in my 40's and have had and played the ATARI probably more than most of you put together, I love my Atari, but get real people, the Wii far outstrips it in every way. Sorry Jason, your our fav presenter ever but Otis and Wii wins hands down. For once, well done John... mikedave
Report as inappropriateAlan03 August 2009
Come on John... You know the Atari should be on the wall. It was the first affordable home game console ever. Can't see why people get so hook up with Wii, is it because they like exercises? Why pay £40 for a hula hoop game when a hula hoop (in the real world) only cost a fiver and doesn't use any electricity? People with a Wii always say “even my mom loved to play on it”. Well, isn't it time to start thinking about the safety hazard for older people on that balance pad or those flying remote control? Or am I missing something?

OK, Atari is Atari... No way that Wii :S could be there against Atari :S

Adding on to my last comment, this should have really been between the Atari 2600 and the NES (nintendo entertainment system) because at one stage those two competing in the market and were both the first console for each company. Also the wii's family friendly market has backfired at one stage when then game Mad World came out and families complained saying such a game should not be placed on such a family friendly system.

Sorry John but there is no way that the Wii should have won this - get a grip on reality my friend!!! :) The Atari is a true legend, everyone knows that - I remember we used to *rent* one out as kids, rent it, with our valuable pocket money, I mean c'mon who would rent a Wii? Also consider the technical genius of those early developers - Pitfall (remember that classic) had to fit in 4K (that's right 4096 bytes!!) of memory! (read this great article http://www.edge-online.com/magazine/the-making-of-pitfall) The Wii for me is exactly what it aims to be, a "casual gamer console", and the fact that your granny can be convinced to play it a few times does not make it a legend. Also (dare I say it) most of the games are frankly pants, I mean c'mon - be honest here, they *are* great when you have your mates around, but there are no great games that you want to sit and actually play through - barring the 1st party Nintendo stuff, most of the 3rd party software is absolute drivel and dross! ....hands down, 100% this is a major mistake, Wii needs *torn* down and VCS put up in it's place. Also I just remember how many youth clubs and summer schools had one, talk about bringing people together, think of the queues that used to form to play pong! :) Change this decision you monkey, you know it's the right thing to do. (...and great show by the way) ;)

Anything can be improved on, but what makes something great is the concept, truly a bad decision.
Report as inappropriateHarry Edwards04 August 2009
I'm sorry Gadget show but the Wii shouldn't have won for several reasons. The Wii from a simply gadget point of view has done nothing different. The only reason it has sold so well was cleaver advertising and aiming at a different market, which generally have more money. Part of the argument was it opened gaming up to a entirely new audience but that would have happened anyway with the next generation of kids already accustomed to gaming the stigma surrounding gaming would of drifted away as these kids grew up. On the other hand the Atari started modern console gaming as we know it. It was the first to allow game console and the blueprint for all that followed. I was not alive when the Atari came out but respect what it has done.
Report as inappropriateHarry Edwards04 August 2009
Where is the PS2? If you want a console that changed the world look no further. The highest selling the undisputed best console of its generation. It changed gaming forever. It still selling loads today even though it’s been three years since the PS3 was launched. For most of those it has been outselling it. It opened up thousands more to gaming than the Wii. It started thousands of people of my age off on gaming. To over look it is a crime.

Report as inappropriatehumorguy04 August 2009
To cater for their young audience, I knew the Wii was going to win, but what really annoyed me was they made a big deal of the Atari 2600 selling 30 million units and having 400 games, and then ignored that the Commodore 64 has sold 50 million and had 20,000 games released for it!

i think the Wii is the best. A) i've never even heard of the atari cause i wasn't even born when it stopped. B) the atari is in the past, technology is getting better and the atari is pratically a dinosaur compared to the Wii. C) the Wii is a family game, many people are saying familys should be doing stuff together more and the Wii is the perfect thing to play with. so all in all move over old atari the Wii is better now! :D

The love is still strong for the Atari 2600. The one, the only, the original! The love for Atari is greater than ever. Each year there are many new titles being written for the system by FANS of the console FOR fans. There are literally over 100 new titles that fans of the Atari have written since 2001. How many homebrews does the Wii boast? That's right... ZERO. Atari brought games to the masses. They kept it simple so anybody could pick up a controller and play. Nintendo basically did the same thing with the Wii. I think both are cool systems but the Atari easily wins in my view. Check out Atariage.com and look in the 2600 store. See for yourselves all the great love, programming skill, and passion Atari beholds even today! :)

The Atari should have won, no doubt about it. Yes the Wii is nes and shiny, with much better hardware etc. But in the end it will only become a footnote in video gaming history, while the 2600 will still be the grandfather of all video games coming. Just because people do not remember the Atari when they are too young is a non argument. How about the Roman empire then?
Report as inappropriateJohnnyboy11406 August 2009
The Atari had one thing over the Wii and that was "playability". The Atari's games were the most simple, graphically primative games there have been, yet they were utterly, utterly addictive. Two reason. One, they were revolutionary and pioneering. Secondly, they had simplicity on their side. You could play for hours and hours on the Atari (and I do appreciate you can do that with some modern games now), but have yet to play on a Wii game that I don't really play for any more than an hour. The Atari was the first, if not over time necessarily the best. But it should have won over the Wii because as well as the reasons above, the 2600 paved the way for every other console after it. Wii is good, the 2600 was an all time great. Wrong decision.....

Jason You Were Robbed !!!, how can you just pick the lastest tech and make it the winner, the Atari was at the forfront of games consoles, many hours of my spotty teanage years were spent playing river raid and pitfall, its like saying the lastest jag is better than a classic e type just as it's newer and has A/C and cruise control, clearly john is wrong here, and this need to be revisted and revised.....cheers brian

It's also not the first time we've seen motion sensor technology. Nintendo already tried it in the 80s with the clunky power glove

The Wii is the anti game console! The Wii has single handedly killed gaming. By only haveing family/casual gaming titals they have sold many units and have high game sales. But all this means is that other companies and consoles have put all of the hardcore games on the back burner to produce cheap, gimiky attempts at games! with no origionality and no difficulty! There are about 3 hardcore games coming out this year for consoles and even now one of them has been push back a year! The wii is the evil in the console world. Bring back the days of the Atari where gaming was a thing you could have as a teenager and not have to share with your family.

Jason didn't help his cause with his "Would your Granny use it?" answer. Plenty of Grannies would have. In fact the Atari had the broadest appeal of any platform up to and possibly including the Wii. John also blew it on the sales numbers for the Wii vs. the Atari. Of course the Atari started slow. There wasn't any vidoe pesogame market. So in '77 and '78 it created the market. Then in '79 and '80 it exploded.
