YouTube turning BlockBuster?
Fancy renting full-length movies on YouTube? Your dreams could soon be answered...
YouTube is one of our favourite sites. Who doesn’t love endless clips of kids headbutting their dads in the unmentionables? Anyway, the big YT is apparently in talks with Hollywood studioss to bring feature-length movies to your 17-inch screen! Oh yes!
This is actually Google umpteenth ploy to make YouTube profitable, because while it’s good news that full-legth movies could be hitting YouTube, the bad news is you’ll have to pay for them. Or at least for the newer flicks. Some older ones are likely to be available for nothing.
According to the Wall Street Journal Lionsgate Entertainment, Sony, and Warner Bros are reportedly in talks to get the latest releases up on YouTube. Whether this is true remains to be seen, but it is in line with where Google wants to go with YouTube saying it: “hope[s] to expand both on our great relationships with movie studios and on the selection and types of videos we offer our community.”
Google itself has in the past charged for video rentals and a download service through Google Video, so offering a similar service on YouTube wouldn’t be a huge stretch. Here’s hoping it comes off. And who knows? You could be watching the likes of He’s Just Not That Into You on YouTube very soon. What’s that? “Not a chance in Hell” you say? Fair enough.
