YouTube and Sony join forces...
YouTube has penned a deal with Sony pictures to show full-length films on the site
YouTube has struck a deal, in what can only be described as the biggest coming together since David and Victoria Beckham (trust us, that analogy works – they were both massive stars when they met), with Sony Pictures to show full feature-length movies on the video-streaming site.
Okay there’s a catch. It’s only available in the US at the moment, but we’re sure it won’t be long before it’s winging its way over here. Google, which owns YouTube, has announced that its signed deals with 12 new content partners to stream live TV shows and fims on its site. And given the Pirate Bay verdict today, this could be the future for film, music and video content online.
A bit like a crappy David Blaine stunt, a “Shows” page has just appeared on YouTube. It feature a range of programmes from Sony’s online studio, Crackle, to films such as the Blue Lagoon and Cliffhanger. Granted they’re not exactly just out of the cinema (unless you frequent the Norwich Multiplex perhaps), but it’s a start. There are even 30 episodes of Dilbert!
As we say, it’s US-only at the moment, but we’re sure we’ll be getting access over here soon. Ah, bring on the slew of mid-90s Sly Stallone action flicks…
