Windows 8 'two years away'

Windows 8 'two years away' Set the time machine for 2012...

There’s no denying that Windows 7 has been a major success story for Microsoft since its launch last year – especially after the dark days of Vista before it.

But the computing world doesn’t stand still, and it looks like Windows’ 7’s successor is well on the way and could be with us in less than two years.

That’s the inside line from a Microsoft Netherlands press release to mark Windows 7’s first birthday. A paragraph at the bottom of the release mentions (translated) that “of course Microsoft is working on the next version of Windows. But it will still be about two years before ‘Windows 8’ appears on the market”.

Apple’s just-announced Mac OS X Lion will be appearing next Summer, a full year – it seems – before Microsoft’s earliest predicted arrival date for its own OS riposte. Perhaps more significant is the fact that Windows 8 is mentioned in inverted commas, indicating that there appears to be some level of debate on just what to call the next-gen OS.

why are they releasing it so early. they just make you buy one thing then in the blink of an eye the next edition is out. Its stupid.

Darius, two words ... Easy Money. they are smart, they know that people will buy nearly every edition that comes out. despite if they have just bought the previous one. I think windows 8 will be a big success ... it is better than mac osx in my opinion as you have allot more freedom with software and stuff like that.

i know alot people complain about how quick new hardware and software is released, particularly by microsoft, but 3 years is forever in technology terms if you want the best most up to date stuff, you have to be willing to pay for it, nobody is forced to go out and buy anything, you either love having the newest things and are prepared to pay for them, or your not much into tech so just dont buy it !

No, what Microsoft are saying is this.... "We will wait until Apple has released their new OS Lion, then we can copy and re-design the it's features and re- release it ourselves", as we at this time have no idea what to put into our so called new OS. That's why Vista was here, we did not do any work!
