The world's most expensive car sold at auction: the Ferrari 250 Testarossa
Okay, we know it’s not strictly a new bit of kit, but cars are the most desirable gadgets around, and Ferraris are arguably the most desirable cars around. Which is why you need to know about this 1957 Ferrari 250 Testarossa which was sold for a staggering £8 million at the weekend, making it the most expensive car ever sold at auction.
The Ferrari 250 Testarossa is significant because a) it’s unbelievably sexy (just look at that black, bullet design) and b) only 22 of the Scaglietti-designed 250s were ever made between 1957 and 1958, winning 10 international races.
Fetching nine million Euros (or £7.97 million in today’s exchange rate), the Ferrari 250 Testarossa beat the sale of the previous most expensive car at auction (a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California), which was purchased by one Mr Christopher Evans of radio fame.
In terms of grunt the Ferrari 250 Testarossa boasts a 300 bhp, 2,953 cc single overhead cam degrees V-12 engine, six Weber 38 DCN carburettors and a four-speed manual gearbox. And most importantly (if you’re a speedster) it has a top speed of 168mph. That’s one Prancing Horse we’d like to get on the back of.
