US Army to use Android tech
Android goes to war
Google’s OS Android has been popping up on an increasing amount of gadgets, and now it seems that the US Army want to use it in its latest battlefield tech. According to reports in the US, a contractor for the body is working with Google to develop a device for soldiers that would display real-time battlefield intelligence.
Raytheon is creating a handheld gadget with the futuristic moniker of “Raytheon Android Tactical System” that would suck down images from satellites and relay them to ground troops. There’d be a zoom function to let them hone in on finer details, right down to licence plates.
Apparently the device is also designed to keep track of fellow soldiers’ movements on the battlefield, as well as “identify potential enemies in a way similar to social networking sites such as Facebook”. Sound positively scary.
The device will apparently disable itself if it fell into enemy clutches. What do you think? Will FourSquare for War catch on?
