UK Kindle store opens its doors
Amazon Kindle – UK books out now
The UK Kindle bookstore has flung open its virtual doors today. Last week saw the announcement of the Amazon Kindle UK edition – the device itself is now on pre-order and you can now get a sneak peek at the sort of content that you can look forward to once you’ve got your mitts on one.
The UK version of the popular eBook store features over 400,000 titles for download, including most UK bestsellers. New releases and bestsellers adorning the digital shelves include the likes of Ian Rankin, Martina Cole, Stieg Larsson and, er, Peter Mandelson.
There are also over a million free titles to download – especially handy if you’re a fan of the classics. And Kindle eBook exclusives include monthly short story collections and childhood favourites, Choose Your Own Adventure series, as well as titles from Danielle Steel and Karin Slaughter.
There are also a collection of books with added audio/video content – including Windows 7 For Dummies and Rose’s Heavenly Cakes.
Prices are more competitive than UK users of the US store will be used to – with some popular titles starting at just £2.70.

Well I've pre ordered the new kindle last week, felt the price was just about right, I've been using my iphone for reading for the last 3 to 4 years, and it's surprising how you get used to reading on a screen that small.

Got the new Kindle 3g not long after the launch, as I had it on pre order and I have to say the quality of the screen is excellent. As someone who has to sit in front of a computer screen for quite a few hours in the day, my biggest fear was, how would I cope with reading from another screen for pleasure, well for me personally I found it very easy, the screen is so neutral and flat, that apart from when you turn the pages and there is this almost instant transition to the next page you can nearly forget that it is electronic. Amazon have had to do the opposite of what most screen manufactures have been doing I.e. TV screens, monitors, IPad etc, they have had to develop something that looked as inert as black ink on paper and with the Kindle 3, I think they have just about achieved it. The selection of books is pretty good as well you would expect with Amazon and very competitive on price. If you go for the 3G the ability to download almost anywhere is very useful, or go for the WiFi and use your home wireless connection. Another selling point is the download a sample, where you can dowload the first 20 - 30 pages of a book to see if you like it. The only downside that I have found is the keyboard is a bit fiddly due to the very small keys. All in all I'm glad that I purchased it.
