Toshiba launches Blu-ray/DVD/VHS combo

Toshiba launches Blu-ray/DVD/VHS combo Alas, it doesn't play LPs too

In a perfect world our home cinema collection would compromise a neat stack of all our favourite titles and TV series on shiny new Blu-ray discs waiting to be shown off on our brand new flat-screen TV.

But of course life isn’t like that, is it? Most of us that have made the move to Blu-ray will no doubt have a meaty collection of ordinary DVDs too, and quite possibly – dare we say it – VHS tapes as well.

That’s where Toshiba’s new D-BW500 comes in. It certainly won’t judge you no matter how you want to get your home cinema kicks, as it comes with a Blu-ray/DVD deck, a VHS recorder drive and a 320GB hard drive all rolled into one.

And of course, should you wish to put that collection of VHS tapes out to pasture once and for all, you’ve got an analogue-to-digital conversion kit right in front of you in a single box, with no wires or fiddly set-up to worry about.

Aside from its multi-format versatility, the D-BW500 also works with Toshiba’s REGZA link technology, and comes with a double digital TV tuner, SD card slot and a USB port for even more ways to enjoy content.

Alas, it’s Japan-only for now, and comes with a UK-equivalent price tag of around £530.

Interesting, but it seems that you have missed one important fact and that is that a blu-ray palyer will play standard dvd's and upgrade the picture.

This is great. If ever my PS3 and my Panasonic DVD/VHS ever die on me I will still be able to get something to play my VHS tapes on, plus I will have recovered two powerpoints and regained some space in my overcrowded HiFi cabinet by replacing my PS3, my Panasonic DVD/VHS player and, if it can play SACDs too, also my Pioneer Universal DVD player. If it can't play SACDs, then it will make room in my HiFi cabinet for a dedicated SACD player.
