Toshiba glasses-free 3D TVs going on sale

Toshiba glasses-free 3D TVs going on sale The glasses-free Toshiba GL1 family

Tomorrow marks an important day in the history of 3D television: it’s the day the first ever glasses-free 3D TV goes on sale to the general public.

If you’re looking for caveats, though, sadly there’s plenty. You’ll have to make do with 12 inches of screen size, a non-HD resolution and a near-£1,000 price tag to get your hands on some specs-less 3D action. Oh, and you’ll have to live in Japan.

Still, full marks to Toshiba for following through and releasing the Regza GL1 family first spotted at the CEATEC show earlier in the year. Tomorrow’s debut arrival is the 12in 12GL1, which boasts an unusual 466×350 resolution – not likely to be too much of a downer on such a small screen – and a ¥120,000 (£925) price tag.

Those waiting to wait until Christmas Day can get their hands on the larger 20in model for exactly double the price. Aside from the larger screen size, the 20GL1 also boasts a 550:1 contrast ratio and a more respectable 720p resolution.
