Three announces in-car Wifi

Three announces in-car Wifi Wifi in your motor

The Gadget Show Live has already kicked off with some great UK exclusive tech news – including Three’s announcement that they will be launching an all-new in-car Wifi service soon. You’ll be able to kit out your wheels with mobile broadband, as Three is now bundling its MiFi hotspot with everything you need to get a signal on the road.

Three’s MiFi mobile hotspot is already a handy little service – essentially letting you create Wifi hotspots for multiple gadgets to jump aboard wherever a 3G signal can be found. Now Three has added this to its In Car Wifi kit kit. You’ll get a MiFi, mains charger, car charger and windscreen holder so you can place it perfectly for keeping that 3G signal up.

So when you’re on the highway, you can also be on the information superhighway, so passengers can make full use of their laptops, iPhones etc. Because a car charger is supplied, you don’t have to worry about the battery running down either.

If you’ve got a netbook to hand, the Three In Car Wi-Fi could also let you whip up a makeshift big screen satnav with your journey plotted on Google Maps though without accurate location and voice alerts, you’d do better to keep your eyes on the road more.

The Three In Car Wifi kit comes with 1GB of data that last for 30 days and will be available shortly. There’s no official line on pricing yet, so stay tuned.

Reading about the original device, it doesn't seem to have a socket to support using an external 3g/umts antenna, unlike certain other Huawei modems. Anyone who has used an external antenna knows that it can improve signal strength and access speed several times over. Does this adapted version offer that option, which would be highly useful with the modem/router partly shielded inside a car? If not, why not?
