The Last of Us story details revealed, no cliffhangers says Naughty Dog
Uncharted 3 developer Naughty Dog has a new game. It’s called The Last of Us – a genre defining experience” for PS3 with survival and horror elements thrown in. Plot details had been thin on the ground up to now, so Naughty Dog, the good folk they are, have finally spilt the proverbial beans on a plot that sounds more buddy-survival picture than the zombie shooter many predicted.
The Last of Us is the latest project from one of the most respected developers in gaming, following its last title – Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. The Last of Us was originally teased in a trailer showing characters Joel – a man in his 40s, and 17-year old Ellie protecting themselves from a zombie ambush. Thanks to game director Bruce Stanley and creative director Neil Druckmann, we’re now a little wiser. Naughty Dog reveals new game called The Last of Us
The Last of Us takes place 20 years after a virus outbreak decimated the population. With no sign of hope, and little left, survivors struggle together in military-safe zones. Tensions are high, and ill-disciplined survivors are routinely executed. Those that test positive for the virus are put put of their misery.
Events see Joel attempting to smuggle the young Ellie out of the city, for reasons Naughty Dog isn’t revealing just yet. Just as well, as she’s landed herself in trouble. And we know what happens to troublemakers. Naturally it all goes wrong, and they are both caught outside and in danger, left to survive against the nasties lurking outside.
We reckon the story sounds like it has more in common with Enslaved Odyssey to the West another game in which you play escort to a former hostage, than your typical zombie blaster. What we do know is that a follow-up sequel is unlikely, Druckmann said in a clip on GameInformer.
“We can say now we don’t want to end on a cliffhanger. We don’t like when games do that. It has to be all encompassing,” he added. “If it does well and people want more then we’ll discuss it.”
Exciting stuff. We can’t wait to hear more. Who else is looking forward to this one?
