Super Mario 3D Land extra levels incoming?
Ahead of what could be a very exciting Nintendo Wii U launch at the end of the year, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has hinted that Nintendo will, in future make more downloadable content available for its games, starting with the likes of Super Mario 3D Land for Nintendo 3DS.
In a talk last week, the Nintendo boss said that such a move would encourage fans to talk about its games more, by regularly injecting new content and DLC – something we could see with future Nintendo games.
“We anticipate that Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 will bring in a substantial profit in the next fiscal year and the year after that. “On the other hand, we will be able to do various things in the field of digital business. Up until now, once consumers who had bought a game got tired of it, they would never play it and it would never draw public attention again,” Iwata said.
A solution, he said, would be to provide new content to deliver more replay value to games such as Super Mario 3D Land. “What if we could provide add-on content through the network? As I referred to before, for example, this is the idea of supplying new stages to Super Mario users who want to play the game more but have completed the game and lost interest in the existing stages.”
Up to now Nintendo has not sold DLC for its titles post-launch. A move towards doing so would fit in perfectly with the Nintendo’s plans for its forthcoming Nintendo Network, which Nintendo promised will deliver the kind of digital content and entertainment not yet seen on a Nintendo console.
