Steve Jobs: iPod Classic is going nowhere
A stay of execution from the boss himself
The Apple iPod Classic – the spiritual successor to the first iPod that hit the market back in 2001 – is starting to look like an endangered species, but Apple boss Steve Jobs has spoken out to assure us there are no plans to can the Classic – at present.
Early last month, reduced stock levels around the US had iPod fans fearing that the classic player was about to be cut from Apple’s lineup.
Turns out an email exchange from back in September that has just surfaced shows the Jobs reassured fans back then that the iPod Classic wasn’t going anywhere.
After Apple had overhauled its entire iPod range bar the Classic in the autumn, an anonymous emailer fired off a missive to Jobs: “Hello, I’ve heard a LOT of speculation that Apple is looking to kill the iPod Classic because it wasn’t updated on Sept 1st, and that a lot of people would rather Touch. The iPod Classic is probably the best iPod in the line. PLEASE DON’T KILL IT!!!”
Jobs, in typically brief style, simply responded: “We have no plans to.”
MacRumors, which has published the exchange, vouches for the authenticity of these emails, so cheer up iPod Classic fans: seems like the music won’t be going anywhere for at least six months – not until the next round of updates at least.
