Spotify announces its own app store
Everyone’s favourite online music service Spotify has announced it is to evolve into a platform for third-party apps offering additional value beyond its core music streaming service.
Spotify Platform will see the creation of an environment in which third-party developers will be able to offer contextual apps that sit within the Spotify ecosystem – in a similar way to how Facebook add-ons sit within the social network’s broader umbrella.
Cheaper music streaming from Sonos now available
The updated Spotify site now features an app finder tool to help you find the apps you want, with initial partners including the likes of The Guardian, Last.fm, Tunewiki, Pitchfork and Rolling Stone.
“We believe that Spotify is creating the history of music today. The online music landscape is filled with innovation and there are lots of great services,” Spotify founder Daniel Ek explained in launching the initiative.
“But there are 500 million people listening online and the majority do this illegally. So we need something better than privacy. It is all about access, so Spotify’s mission was simple: give people access to all the music all of the time. And make it legal.”
Spotify says its core music catalogue is now 15 million songs strong, and is growing at a rate of 20,000 per day.
