SpareOne mobile phone runs on an AA battery
The SpareOne looks like a toy but is in fact a clever mobile phone designed to work on just a single AA battery, should your regular mobile phone run out of power, or become misplaced.
It may not be a match for any of today’s smartphones in terms of what it can actually do, however, for a phone that runs on a single AA battery, the SpareOne is more impressive than one might think.
For one thing it features an impressive ten hours of talk time. On a lone AA battery, colour us impressed. And if unused, the shelf life of the battery inside can last up to 15 years, making the SpareOne handy for taking away on your travels, or that backpacking holiday out into the wilderness that you’ve had on hold for far too long.
The SpareOne is a bit of an eye-catcher, too. A cool design shows off its battery to the world, as if to say “look at me, I’m different.” Because the SpareOne is so easy to use, it is suitable for all ages.
Should you need a SpareOne, the AA battery-powered handset is expected to start shipping in March. At a cost of around $50 in the U.S. Word up when we get a UK release date.

A clever idea and good to have in the emergency kit of a car too, one question springs to mind tho, do the UK mobile operators do PAYG sims that don't expiire or get de-registered if they are not used for a long time? As the idea of this phone suggests it will be used very very infrequently

What you really want is a "duplicate sim" so that you can put your number to this and use in situations where you dont want to take your smartphone or when its run out of battery etc. Wonder if its water proof, that would be a cool trick.
