Sony's new W Series Vaio loves the planet
Sony's latest eco-friendly Vaio
Sony has launched a new eco-friendly addition to its Vaio W Series range of laptops.
Nearly 80 per cent of all plastic parts in the Vaio W Series Eco Edition are made from recycled materials, while eco-friendly production methods ensure 10 per cent lower CO2 emissions and there’s the bare minimum of printed documentation.
Anyone shelling out for the planet-loving Vaio W will see it delivered in a brown PC carry bag instead of the usual cardboard carton, with the bag’s outer fabric manufactured using recycled PET bottles.
Under the lid, the eco theme continues with the choice of components. An energy-efficient Intel Atom processor and LED-backlit Vaio display combine to dish up an Energy Star 5.0 certification.
The power-sparing components mean an impressive 7.5-hour battery life, while more everyday specs include 1GB of on-board RAM, a 250GB hard drive and Windows 7 Starter Edition.
Also being added to the Vaio armada today is the E Series, a 15.5in media-friendly range available in various configurations. Its chief claim to fame is a Web button that lauches the laptop’s web browser before the Vaio is fully booted up.
Both new arrivals go on sale this month, though we have yet to get confirmation on prices.

I am a big fan of Sony Vaio and I have several full-size Vaio laptops and a desktop. I recently bought a W12S1E netbook in order to take notes while away from home and was very impressed by the high screen resolution and long battery life. However, I had to return it to the shop as Vaio, sadly, decided to shorten the space bar and put five keys to the left of it, instead of the standard four, so being a touch typist, every type I hit the space bar with my left thumb I actually hit the forward slash key instead. I then wanted to order a new W series laptop (customizable and only available online from Sony), but it turns out that all W series in the UK have the same keyboard with the shortened space bar, so no use to touch typists. All the pictures of these models are wrongly shown with four keys on websites of all major retailers like Amazon, Play, Argos, Tesco and even on the Sony Vaio website. The same models sold in some countries outside the UK come with four keys to the left of the space bar. Frustrating!
